I make around 450k total. How much can I expect at other top companies? This is for SWE role. 15 yrs experience. Assume I won't get L6 at google or E6 at fb or L7 at Amazon. Just want to gauge the market before beginning the process. Just can't take this Verizon/Oath BS any more. Don't want Verizon 's name on my resume. Plus they won't pay as well after one year of acquisition closing.
That is good money man. What is another 50 or 100 going to change? Life is more than this. Enjoy it, live it.
You might be able to get close to 400 as L5. Negotiate harder on the RSUs rather than base comp so your raises are not limited in the future
Likely 400K top
With 15 yrs of experience you should make L6 at Google. if not initially after a couple of years. then comp will go to the 500-650 range. good luck!
Are you happy? If almost half a million isn't good enough, what will be?
I'm happy for sure but my career prospects don't look good post acquisition. Hence this is kinda temporary. So far I've enjoyed my work at Yahoo but the good talent is leaving in hordes because people don't see a future in Verizon.
Ahhh. ok that makes more sense to me now. tx
Investing in some specific domain could help. Having deep domain knowledge will give you additional options where to come to get $450+ salary. The bar and expectations will still be about the same as L6/E6 in G/FB but you will compensate some SWE skills with additional domain experience.
Seems like you're asking if this is as good as it gets? Perhaps you'll have to take a 50k paycut initially. Wise to be thinking ahead.
You should be able to get a high e5 package at Fb or google for high 300s total avg comp. Competing offers will help. With that kind of experience you should be able to beat expectations and get double bonus and refreshers so you might hit low 400s easily after some RSU growth. You could also push for an e6 offer. Expectations will be higher so a bit riskier on the job security front, at least at Facebook but with a good 15 yrs of solid experience it's probably fine. I got hired at e5 but I'll get e6 in a year but I have much less experience than you. Its been less stressful that way.
Why not interview and find out?
Sure. Just that preparing for the gruesome interviews takes a ton of time only to find out that either you won't get this much or you'll be at the highest side of the compensation slab and hence won't be eligible for any raises for the next 4 years. Wanted to see if there is an easy way to find this out.
I am familiar with hockey having come from the Midwest. Wayne Gretzky once said "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take". Thus I am supportive of your efforts to explore opportunities outside YHOO. I want you to be happy, productive and committed going forward. Having said that, please give serious thought to continuing your great work at YHOO. We hate to lose you and it is always a sad day for YHOO and myself when our best folks leave.
