I came to software engineering from a non-CS background. My coworkers told me in a meeting that people with CS-background are better engineers because they know how computers work. That’s fine with me. I guess they are. Even if they aren’t, that’s none of my business. I’ve proven that I’m good enough to get hired. I don’t need to join any dick measurement contest about the things I don’t care about. My boss patronizes me often. I’m also ok with that. I’m getting paid decently. This is a job. If he PIPs me, I’ll interview and get a new one. I have some skills. They’re proven. I know that. The truth is, I don’t mind the work but I won’t break my neck to do it. I tick the boxes, close the tickets and close my laptop. That means no late night work to get promoted or to impress my boss. I admit what I don’t know and I’m upfront about it. I don’t try to get promoted. I do my best to not hold my team down. I do my best to not be a blocker or a burden of anyone else’s time. My coworkers play a lot of politics to get ahead. I don’t. I treat people with respect. I help out new hires. I don’t comment on people’s religions or cultures. There are many ways of life. Who knows which is best. Also, who am I to judge others? I don’t know them well. I didn’t grow up in their countries, following their traditions. I let people live their lives. I don’t have a passion. I don’t identify myself as my company or my job title. I’m just doing a job like the other jobs before this one. I don’t need to be this or that to make a living. I care about my life and my family. I have savings, so I can ride through a potential recession easily. I don’t have any expensive taste. If I have to cut my budgets, I'll be totally fine. I’m just an employee, a mediocre one in many eyes. This is my confession. Thank you for coming to my Ted(x) talk. TC 200🥜 YOE 4
TC or GFTO! Jk jk, I'm not one to judge...but TC!
Ok. Sorry. Let me update it.
Well said. There is more to life, especially once you have a family to provide for.
Don’t worry most companies want to hire exactly this profile of person. Does their work consistently and doesn’t rock the boat. In fact you are the ideal employee especially if you are loyal (don’t hop every few months).
Thanks. I’m not worried. Not sure if I’m their ideal employee but I don’t care otherwise. I’m an at will employee anyway.
Nice one OP, I wish you all the best.
Thanks.
I think you’re good engineer 😊
🤗
I’ll just add that most engineers I’ve worked with in my long career don’t actually know how the computers really work. And the thing is, they don’t really need to. What we all are (usually) good at is being comfortable with abstractions; that’s why we have them.
That’s interesting. The one who said that actually came from a non cs background but now a techlead. It guess it came from a place of insecurity. I really don’t know.
I mean I get it. Most of us will work with someone who is banging their head against something that would be solved by looking at one level lower of abstraction. Those moments tend to stick with us more than they should; most of us get stuck in those moments and need someone else to help us past our blind spot.
Like your attitude. Can you refer me plz?
I wish I could.
Holy cow I've just read your entire wall of text I don't care about! Just kidding. Enjoyed the read. Keep up the good work :)
Cows are holy animal . Kindly respect it
I would love to hire you… Once I change my employer.
Good luck with your interviews!
Welcome to the sociopathic tech world. If you have a good manager and good team don’t leave. Money is not worth the mental trauma. And is you have a bad team/ manager don’t stay just leave and find a better fit
hmm but at what point is the money worth the switch. my tc is 143k as an L4. wlb, manager, and team are great tho
If your manager is truly great then you will be paid market value and promotions will happen in time
