I'm currently employed, but considering a change. I have 20 YOE mostly on the infrastructure side, and the last 10 has been working primarily in the cloud (I have both AWS Pro certs and all the associates). I do systems architecture/implementation/administration, as well as devops-y stuff, like IaC and CI/CD. Basically, pre-sales design through implementation and ongoing support, and everything in-between. I'd like to move more toward the SWE side, but I don't know what role would bridge that gap. I don't have formal swe training, and my code experience has mostly been scripting (building small tools) and infrastructure related using frameworks like the cdk. Does anyone have any advice, or recommendations? Thanks in advance. Try platform engineer role.
Good call - I'll take a look at those. Thanks!
Hey I am very similar to you but with 10 yoe. Why do you want to change to scripting after this much experience. You can easily get TAM or SA roles right. Any specific motivation to start again ?
I agree. OP there is a lot of demand for SRE roles with your skills. Pay is similar to SWE. You just have to find a company that pays RSUs
That's a good question. I do wonder if a TAM or true SA role would be a good change of pace. The more I mess around with my personal projects in my free time, though, the more I enjoy coding. And, if I look at what I'm happiest doing in my day-to-day work, it's when I get to dig into a new IaC project. I think I just like building stuff, and coding is challenging and fun, and new(ish) to me.
Dm if you see a role that fits you at Dropbox
Tons of online courses and do personal projects.
This is just solid advice for any level, and probably what I'd recommend had I happened upon this question from someone else. Good perspective, and thanks for the feedback!
