Considering a lucrative job offer in Chicago.

I will have to relocate my family from warm and sunny San Diego California. Is it worth it? My daughter is 14 and just started HighSchool. Not sure why the posting says new mgmt.? I am a senior level executive.

Gee, you cannot make a simple decision like this? How could you be a manager? Sorry for the hedge fund that hires you.

Citadel will fire you in a month. Mark my words.

If you can deal with the weather, absolutely. Cost of living there is extremely reasonable in comparison, better food, better culture, nicer people, and far more things to do.

Pirch IKVC45 OP Sep 4, 2017

Thank you for the educated response. I was hoping to hear about the culture and people.

You will be gunned down thanks to the high shooting rate in Chicago.

What part of the city would you be in btw? The people seem far more approachable in the Midwest than here. The city itself has all different areas and you can get a bite to eat any time day or night. Summer nights there are beautiful. It is a GORGEOUS city. Of course it has its downsides too, but if I could take the city and everything about it and plop it here in the coast I would in a heartbeat. The winters are tough if you've never done them before. Some people don't seem bothered by them, I really was. The summers are fairly hot and humid with mosquitoes. Public transportation and traffic is far better than the bay area and LA. If you don't mind a commute (45 min-hour) from the city, you can get yourself a big ass house very cheap. Expect to pay a third or less for housing in the suburbs. Check Zillow for pricing.

Chicago is a great city. I used to live there, the north side and burns obviously are a lot safer than the south side. The winters are brutal. They're really not a joke. I was there for the storm that left cars stranded on Lake Shore Drive a few years ago. Really not a joke sitting on the 27th floor of an apartment building listening to the wind howling around all night. However that was my fault for living in that condo building 🤣. Since you have kids I'm going to assume you won't be living in the city? The commute from the burbs is about what you would expect but I remember some great public schools out there as well. I like Chicago. The reason I left was because I felt there weren't enough job opportunities in general outside the city. It's probably a place to return to when I'm not in the "building" stage of my career.

Chicago is wonderful! The winters can be rough, (like negative 20 on a bad day) but we do have excellent food and people. The public transit options are great! There are several suburbs that you can live in and take an express Metra rail into the city for $150-180/month. If you're looking to live in the city itself, areas like Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Roscoes Village, Ravenswood, Andersonville, are north and are more family friendly. We have the L system which has trains that run every 3-8 minutes during rush hour.

Why do you wanna leave San Diego ?

Chicago and surrounding areas are great, the northern suburbs (Park Ridge, etc) are popular. The state itself sucks, make sure you do your research on long term plans of Illinois. Our government is very depressing.

What's the offer if I might ask?

Winter is brutal, I wouldn't go for less than 1m total annual comp.
