Consulting Allowed?

I’m a UX designer at Apple with an extensive background in product development and human factors. I like my job, but I also want to consult with a few outside startups. Am I limited to doing outside work while I’m on payroll with Apple? I’ve always strictly worked company to company and never took a break to do self-employed work, so I was curious about the outside opportunities available while still keeping my day job.

The answer is if you’re salaried it is not acceptable to work for another company. Check HR Web.

  • As long as you're not using work you've done while on apple's payroll it shouldn't be a problem. I would consult any employment contract you have with them as well as employee regs.

You should also never ever do any outside work during your scheduled work hours or using your company's hardware or resources.

Therein is the core of the problem:

When thinking about the “work I’ve done”, would the design lessons learned from products I’ve worked on be a part of my employment agreement, or more toward personal realizations? This is a tough area to navigate, because there are certain intangibles I’ve learned that aren’t specifically related to product development, but are basically within our unwritten principles of design.

    • That sounds like a very specific question related to your specific work.

Ive done plenty of research to figure out how to do new things that I only learned from my job but that knowledge is now permanently mine so it's not like I can't ever use it again.

If the principles you're talking about are brand and company specific then I definitely would not use them.

Like replicating a company style guide for use on an outside project would basically be IP theft imo. But of you learned how to kern and space your fonts better in AI and ID then that's something you could move to an outside project easily.

I don’t think it would bother most other companies but apple has always been very secretive and paranoid. You might want to tread carefully in case they might go after you

As required by company, we need to report to the manager any outside job.

You need formal permission to engage in outside work under Apple policy. Look up the formal policy on business conduct.

You own your mind but Apple definitely pays you a premium to work exclusively for them.

Personally I’d open source the work or creative commons maybe, in your case. Money isn’t everything and most startup equity is just a pain in the ass.
