Contemplating no job or uprooting life

Having a wife, kid and home, the RTO to Seattle is really questioning my need and desire for money vs uprooting my life. I have been working non-stop since 2009 pretty much. I've saved money in my IRA and 401k and also helped max out my wife's IRA and 401k. We also bought a home. All told, I do have about $1.7M in total networth, but the majority is locked in retirement accounts and real estate. I have about $250k in liquid investment or cash. At the same time, I spend nearly $10k/month on my bills, between that day cares, mortgage, SALT taxes, car, etc. And beyond that, working 9-5 is a defined part of my life. Its part of my identity. I love to engineer, build software etc. But right now, I am at a crossroads of figuring out: - Do I personally move up to Seattle / Fly up and come home every other weekend? - I anticipate this will cost $3k/mo in logistics - Do I uproot my family, find a new school for my kid, and go to a place where I have no friends or connection, other than co-workers. - Amazon will pay for the relo at least - Or... do I simply not comply with the RTO, let Amazon fire me and continue to try my luck finding a new role. - This may mean an extended period with no job - This may mean dipping into savings - This may mean pulling my kid out of day care anyway - This may mean using my wife's company's shitty insurance plan - better than nothing - This may mean not being able to save, etc I guess this post is part me writing out what life could look like down the line if worst case scenarios come true. A part of me feels that if I was good enough to get into Amazon, I should be able to find a new employer, but I can't imagine getting a job with my current TC. My current salary is Base $205k Bonus / Stock ~ $220k/year I live in a semi-big city in So Cal, there is some opportunity down there, but not nearly as much as LA / SF / NY / etc but I believe it is out there. One last thing... even though I make ~$425k/year, I have become a bit jaded. Even with this salary, buying a legit, full family home in So Cal is still out of range - I was recently only qualified for a $1.1M place - but good homes are like $1.5-2M. That may be another topic, but a part of my feels even my current "high" salary isn't enough so whats the point for now. At the same time, I literally have no one to complain to or ask advice, as every looks at me like I am some rich asshole. Appreciate any advise. Yeah I know, very first world problems. But just keep in mind, I got a long, painful way to fall. #amazon #rto

And this is why I refuse to live in The People's Socialist Republic of california. Make 400k and still can't afford a home

3k/month in logistics plus 2k+/month in mental stress and isolation means you can easily take a $56k pay cut and come out even

None of the options you listed are even out of the ordinary. Regardless of covid, commuters were common (some took the opportunity to get PPL and fly themselves), working more than 14 years before retiring is common, relocating is common (or even frequent for some fams) etc. Whichever one you pick, it’s not some special hardship. I used to work at Oracle before covid and they also summoned some remote workers to consolidate locations. Some took relo, others quit, all were valid personal decisions and the show went on.

From what I’ve been told Amazon has been providing extensions to people to RTH until May 2024. That should give you ample time to find a new gig.

My manager did mention they put me down for 90 days+ (not 90 days exactly) but I don't have insight on what 90+ means. I suppose I could ask again. My manager thinks around December the big decisions will need to be made so I suppose at that time I will find out for sure if I can extend it out to May.. (FYI my team has already lost 2 people :( as it turns out, some of the Seattle folks don't want to RTO into the city either lol)

Your lender stiffed you. Find a better broker

I was just talking about this with my parents who are trying to sell their home. Lots of tech workers in the same boat. Who the hell wants to go back to tech hub where homes are crazy overpriced and even tech salaries don’t compensate. Lots of people like you buddy. Good luck

How did the lender only qualify you for 1.1M? Do you have equity in your current home you’d use?

You moved to SoCal during Covid ? What do you fundamentally like about living there ? All of the things you mention are one time costs to pay if you move.
