A couple of agencies reached out for contract positions at faang companies, mostly for their low priority projects. One of those hiring managers is interested in my resume, so they want to proceed. I'm interviewing with 4 companies for full time roles at this moment (on site) but it will take more than a month or so even if everything goes smoothly. So I think it's a good opportunity to fill the time gap in the meantime. At the same time, the role itself is not tempting. Sounds like it's rather menial and def not for a mid level designer role, although they require 3+ yoe. Also, the hourly rate is lower than expected, but I think it's better than nothing. I'm financially stable so not urgently need money, but as a mid level designer I feel like I need to have something on my resume and don't want to have too much time gap between the jobs. Any experience similar to me? Want to hear anything about contract design roles. Tc: 0
Same^ can you refer me to the agencies?
Me too!
Contract roles are low-priority work like you said, and you get cut easily. Especially if the rate isn’t as high as you want it to be, it’s a garbage deal. Some people convert but it’s rare from what I’ve seen. Basically if you like hopping contract to contract like some folks then it can be good, but FTE is always better in my opinion. FWIW the contract designers at FAANG that we’ve interviewed have not been that good. We haven’t hired any. That’s not to say everyone is bad — just that it’s not very “prestigious” if that’s something you care about.
Where do you work?
I work at a consultancy. Not saying all contractors are bad or anything! We just haven’t had luck with any of the ones that have applied to us.
Take the contract to fill void/money and keep applying/interviewing for FTE. All design managers know that contract gigs are temps and are actually happy if you land something full time elsewhere, so don't feel bad about ditching them. Contract employees are easily replaceable and fillable. If the gap is small, no need to put contract on your resume. Although this isn't always the case, I have seen contract designers convert to FTE. In order to do this, you need to stand out and go above and beyond the expectation of a normal contract designer. Look into the company's goals/principles and apply them to your work. Best of luck.
Hi! Can you refer me to your contracting agency too? I’m also looking for work
