Do Tech leads make more than Engineering Manager?
Hi all, right now I'm working as SWE at a very chill WLB company in Singapore. Just recently signed an offer from TikTok for 160k SGD (level 2-1, incl bonus & stock, 20% increment from current TC), but when I'm about to leave, my manager gave me a counter offer to match that number. Is it wise to try to renegotiate with TikTok? Or is reneging even better? I don't mind being blacklisted at TikTok TBH, just applying to learn new stuff cuz it's a bit boring here. YoE: 3 Counter offer TC: 110k base, 10k bonus, 30k stocks (public) -- vest every 3 months TikTok TC: 120k base, 30k bonus, 10k stocks #counter #offer #tiktok #bytedance #wlb
Never accept a counter is the wisdom of the ancients
Actually, I'm even thinking to use this counter offer to increase the offer of TikTok -- seems like a high risk high reward plan. If it fails, I will still work at my company and with the same TC. TikTok Singapore is known to be very hard to get increments.
I did this, used a counter to get a higher offer, although not at tiktok... worked for me. Good luck
You’ll probably work more at TikTok, learn more, and it could be a good stepping stone. But you could be worked to death. Really depends on team and manager. You’ll still be bored at your old job and they may think you’re a flight risk.
Have you worked at other companies? I'm curious, putting compensation aside (let's say no flight risk), do you think the learning opportunity is worth the cost of WLB?
Oh and if you are comfortable, could you share what team are you in & how is the WLB?
What’s your relationship with the manager ? Chill company means a company that treats employees well with actual examples ? Does your manager have actual authority or just a line manager TBH I’d ask my manager why wasn’t I compensated like so before resignation and how will my TC track next 3 years. Then consider my managers authority to impact my TC & career, how decent the company is (sounds small) and take a stab at likely hood of some retaliation if the company lays off / you go for a better internal role
Hey thanks for your advice! Relationship's quite good, seems like he indeed wants me to stay. But yeah he's just a line manager w/o actual authority -- he often said something like I am the second best in my team other than the team lead. Current company is a well-known Uber equivalent in Southeast Asia, with 10k+ employees, and personally I know one guy who got 3 counter offers and is still at the company.
Stay, negotiate remote, then work both
Did you try to counter? Isn’t asking for 30% raise on the the current pay a very standard process?
Well, my last year TC was 110k and I didn't expect to get a huge increment to around 135k. After I showed intention to resign, they doubled my RSU from 15k to 30k (hence I got ~150k now). During nego, I told the TikTok HR to assume that I will have an increment at my company of around 10-15%. But they asked for payslips though, so I showed only the 110k one.
Btw after how many days, did you receive the offer after the HR call?
Is TikTok SGP hiring?
Yes. DM for a referral
