I am in the final stages of interviews for a director position in Coupang. The position is in Seoul. The recruiter told me salaries are similar to New York any idea about salary or how much I should als for?
L7 Director should be around 240k USD with a monthly stipend for rent and schooling. They should also offer you a) cash equity or b) stop options at a $2 strike price - If b) you should receive around 100k options (not $100k but 100k units).
Having worked in some Asian countries I have herd WLB is non existant in Japan and Korea and its expected to work 9-9. But based on what I am on Fire says looks like a good deal to get 240K base and options worth 100K units. This would be a good offer in US as well perhaps in Seattle. Free schooling and housing on top of that is icing on the cake! SK is a developed country so it would be better than NYC for sure but equally crowded. Not sure if you'll have more options in case if this doesn't work out. I am thinking this would be an expat package!
Becareful before you make the decision. You will be out very quickly if your performance is not at the wow level. Locals are very unhappy with the wage gap thats more than 2x. They demand that you provide change and growth at a level that they wouldn’t be able to find from a local. I’ve seen many officially complain to HR. I’ve also seen HR tip on peoples salary so it will not be a secret for sure.
With money, You will regret so much if go to seoul for coupang director or mgr. just read around. And i heard word of mouth . You will learn hard way yourself; That is only way since You do not trust what you read here.
OP any updates? Did you get your offer with numbers?
No updates yet. The recruiter hasn't yet got back to me
If your not Korean i wouldnt go.
100k units seem exaggeration. At a 20 dollar price - are you saying a director is getting 2 min grant for 4 years!
As an L6 Sr Manager I was able to negotiate 100k units. So it’s not an exaggeration at all.
@ OP: any updates? Got the final offer? Are you able to give us an update?
Bumping it back up as there is a possible executive leadership offer at Coupang I am exploring. Curious to hear final offer as well.
Salaries are not similar to NY. Be careful. Cost of living in Seoul is pretty high. Rent will give you a good idea... I was in talks with them and was offered $200k for a position worth almost 600k in the US (15 yoe)
Were they willing to negotiate? Also was your role in USA or Seoul?
They wanted me to relocate to Seoul. There wasn’t much room for negotiation...
