I posted on Craigslist the other day looking for a roommate. Soon my posting was taken down because the posting contains a few Chinese words, thus was “prejudiced against non-Chinese speakers”. Those words are the names of some nearby Chinese restaurants and supermarkets. I figured non-Chinese people wouldn’t be interested anyway. Fine, I deleted any non-English words and reposted it. It was taken down again! For saying “male only”! Obviously I’m being sexist this time according to Craigslist. Come on! I’m just a poor dude, with a jealous wife, trying to make a little extra cash to help with the mortgage. What am I supposed to do! Am I really being insensitive or Craigslist is taking political correctness too far?
The Fair Housing laws are from the 60s.
What you experience is too much policing by CL but it’s really not aimed at you but to protect housing laws. I would just put the post back and not look at the one who suits your need as this isn’t a big corporation like Avalon who is renting apartment and needs to be 100% fair with every single person who comes to them. I wouldn’t even suggest what I did if it wasn’t blind
Thanks for all your replies! It seems it’s me being insensitive. Alright, odd to me but if it’s a rule, it’s a rule.
Start reporting all the "female only" postings and see if they disappear. Then sue CL when they don't :)
Haha. If I had the kind of money and time to sue CL, I wouldn’t be renting out a room.
It is not about PC...Your employer just being sued for this: https://money.cnn.com/2018/03/27/technology/facebook-housing-lawsuit/index.html
Fuck Craigslist, I showed them a scam in action and they dgaf. Good prob a housing listing gets scammers or was listed by a scammer and they turn the other cheek.
Oh man... jealous wife 😂 you can filter out yourself and not through CL if she really insists.
Make sure the renter has lower tc than you
"Lower TC or GTFO"
Ok imma start flagging the female only ads then. See ya bitches
Yes you're overreacting. It's illegal to discriminate on gender for housing so I'm glad CL is doing something (though not illegal if it's your home and you're bringing in a roommate I believe).
Yes I’m bringing in a roommate in my own home. I never thought it’s discrimination. It’s a one bathroom small home. A female roommate wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing it with me either. If this were discrimination, might I call having separate restrooms in public gender segregation?
I looked it up, and in California, for a spare bedroom, it is not illegal to discriminate on gender ‘at the door’ or over the phone - but it is illegal to advertise it AND you can’t tell them your true reasons; if you do, you lose the legal privilege to discriminate. Odd but true. So tell them you already found a renter. It’s still illegal to discriminate with other protected classes, such as national origin or race.
