Crappy Citibank interview

Yesterday I had a crappy Citibank interview for a full time lead role. The interview panel was supposed to be 3 people. Only two joined…which is fine. Both of them were contractors to Citibank(courtesy LinkedIn). It was supposed to be an hour long interview. The email clearly asked me to have my headphones on. One of the interviewer asked me to remove my headphones without giving any reason. I think I know why…he probably thought someone was promoting me…I couldn’t hear clearly when I removed my headphones. They were asking me crappy questions about development and reporting. Neither one of these questions were even part of the job descriptions. Meanwhile they were getting pings in the background, probably both of them talking to each other about me. Exactly after 17 mins, one of the interviewer abruptly cut me off when I was talking and said the HR Will get back to me. I felt like I was the worst person ever and they thought my experience was fake as they assumed I’m getting prompts from someone. With 15 years of experience in leadership role, this is what I had to put up with. I tried talking to the recruiter but his response was he is very busy and can’t talk. I’m truly disappointed that a company like Citi doesn’t bother about candidate engagement and experience.#engineer #interview #it #crappy

Hey sorry to hear about this. Not an HR here but feel the frustration in this. They had a few incidents recently where they interviewed someone and completely different person showed up at the office for the job. Not an excuse for the terrible interview process

Oh wow! That’s bad. But really they should know how to treat a senior resource. They can search my name and my photo will appear. I had a 2nd round of in person interview too.

I have seen YouTube videos of folks being caught lip synching…it’s cringe and too low!

Welcome to interviewing. Take it easy. If someone rejected you, doesn't mean that you're not worthy.

If it were rejection, I wouldn’t mind. It was utterly rude and disrespectful.

Sorry to hear about this situation. What kind of roles are you looking for? Some teams at Citi are better than others with actually prioritizing interviews and having the right people join. The recruiter should also take accountability to find out what happened on the interviewers end and see if they can have another interview to make things right.

I’m looking for a lead or manager kind of roles. Need to get out of this shitty situation at work. It’s nothing that I did but some new folks have joined n playing dirty politics and treating me and my team like untouchables because we are vendors. The recruiter didn’t even bother to talk to me. You are right, there are better teams out there at Citi.

I am 90% sure that the interviewers had a background from South Asia because this sounds so close to my experiences with majority of them (not all of them) regardless of the company they are working for. How do I know? Because they always end up choosing me as their candidate because I have a similar background and I hate it. But anyways I've had horrible experiences with others in the US too and not just Asians, but they are in the majority when it comes to jaw dropping interview experiences.

Yes, they both had an Asian background. I myself am Asian and I hate saying this but i have to agree with you.

That's life man. I work here and this place is far from perfect. Internal politics and nepotism is ruining it for many. The interview process sucks and the compensation framework is totally messed up. But nothing you can do about it. Trust your self and keep playing the game. Find something that aligns with your values. Something better awaits. Cheers!
