So I interviewed at a hedge fund yesterday in New York and they've already sent me an offer today for 3X my current pay! but I have to relocate to New York from San Francisco. I have 10 years in the valley working in consumer web and really love my lifestyle here. I currently make $200K as a software engineer with great benefits. This new position is a suit and tie fintech job near Wall Street. The offer is slightly shy of $600K a year for a director of private cloud services role for a top 5 hedge fund managing tens of billions of dollars. I have a few concerns I'd love your opinions on. 1) I don't know anything about Wall Street and hedge funds but I've heard they are a death march and super cutthroat environments. Is this true? Will I be paying for the pay bump in stress and anxiety? 2) if I take the job, I'm walking away from about $600k in unvested RSU's but getting it back in salary I guess 3) what would you do? 4) any questions I should be asking them? I have a week to think it over, constructive feedback is much appreciated.
seriously 600k $ .jesus. i am ashmed of my salary.
Very :(
Made my peace with it. There is always someone who will have a better salary than you.
What are examples of passive income you invest in?
Do you have to wear a suit and tie though?
This shouldn't be a factor in the decision.
Disagree. Casual dress isn't something I'd ever consider giving up.
you have 600k rsu but you make 200k yearly? is it base 200k?
Yes
600k base ???
Yes
This is crazy
Does the new company offer any RSU or just $600k base?
funds don't have equity
Still $600k base is a whole lot of money.
Too much money makes me wonder what they're up to hmm. Be careful!
It seems Wall Street never needs to worry about money
It's a financial firm. Many successful investment bankers can make several million a year based on their performance.
Were you contacted by a recruiter or you applied there?
I was referred by a former coworker. He loves his job there so far but he's ok you been there 3 months
wait, is that our taxpayer bailout money you will be getting? I would want my share...... if it's 600k base, book your ticket on tonight's red eye and don't look back.
Your current job is about building things and work life balance, your new job would be about making money. period. and working round the clock. You'd probably need more money than 600 to make that worthwhile. Do you like nyc? family? significant other? generally speaking I go with gut. Twitter isn't going anywhere or at least tech isn't, you could always return as well with some new experience.
