Hey all! I am having a hard time deciding what to do so I wanted to get other opinions. Currently work at MS in an engineer non SWE role TC is 86k and potential 20% bonus based on performance so 103k tops. Remote though so huge plus. CK SWE offer is 109k base 87k stock/4 yrs so 130k TC plus 10k relocation (140k total first yr). In person Charlotte office. COL similar to where I am now. I've been looking to transfer into SWE in MS but I not sure if it's worth it as remote the TC will probably be around 116k and that's if I manage to transfer. YOE: 0 New Grad Computer Science major Business minor if that matters Update: ended up choosing Credit Karma, by far the best decision I've made, lot cooler role, great manager/team members, and will have far bigger impact. They even made an adjustment for market rate and upped my TC a week after I started, new TC will be 149K, huge jump from under 100K. #engineering #software #swe
CK has been good
Are you in the Charlotte office?
Microsoft is a better name and if you want to move to a major office could be a better choice. But the CK offer is in hand. Tough call
Ck is great. Good wlb. Smart engineers. If you want to go back to microsoft for swe you can always do that. Take the CK offer now since it’s there and you’ll learn a lot. Good luck and welcome!
Ck is lit
I've been hearing good things, are you based out of Charlotte?
Yep
I would say come to CK. There’s a lot of cool projects happening at the moment and the tech we use is very up-to-date (there’s a lot of transitioning rn too). I don’t know about Microsoft but I feel like there’s a lot of boring teams doing boring work. However if remote is a huge plus for you then probably MS. I work at the Charlotte office and it’s a pretty nice place. I wouldn’t settle here but I wouldn’t mind staying for a couple years. Company culture is great so that’s a huge plus too, and ppl here are usually very nice.
The fact that we have so many people chilling on Blind means good wlb lol
wlb is relative and will depend on your team and your manager. Who is going to be your manager is key , it will either make your CK experience the best job ever or the worst job ever so make sure you know more about your manager before accepting the offer.
It's new grad so they don't tell us anything like that, I'm guessing it'll be random
You should just ask which team will I be joining and also ask to at least speak with a hiring manager. There is no special rule for new grads that will stop them from answering that question. You could say you are not sure , and would like to know more about the role and the team before accepting the offer. Don’t make the mistake of joining without knowing which team you are joining. The market is still hot , so don’t be shy.
Not sure I'd listen to that guy. At that level we expect you to learn and ramp. (Ask about the career framework). As long as you are in good standing you can switch teams in 6mo-12mo. There's so many openings and new projects the opportunities will come. A new grad on my team is loving his decision to join. Ask the recruiter to talk to another new grad who just joined.
Can confirm this 👆
Do you have any good advice for a joining new grad?
Why not explore SWE opportunities at Microsoft? wouldn’t it be easier since you are already there you’ll be able to find out easily more about the org/team you are joining. It seems from what I am reading wlb is important to you. I might be repeating what some have already said but wlb will be contingent on your manager , your teammates , the org where your team is , are there seasoned engineers on the team you can learn from etc a lot of factors that are valid for any company. As a new grad I made the mistake 10 years ago by joining a terrible team , it took me a few years to unlearn all the bad coding / engineering practices I learned there 😅 not to mention the shitty wlb I had to endure back then.
I tried for a while man but surprisingly hiring managers ghost your emails and you just get a generic not selected, like it's a million times more frustrating
OP which company did you end up joining ?
Went with Credit Karma, 100% the right move
Good for you! I was asking because I had offers from CK, Microsoft and square and ended up choosing square

How do non tech get tech roles or jobs without prior exp?
I'm a Computer Science major so technically I am tech
You should post that
