Crime rate in Atlanta

I’m starting georgia tech this August and a bit worried about it’s crime rate. Is it really bad? Any tips?

Stay strapped up

Uh, no. Violent crime in Atlanta is localized to a few neighborhoods you will never see unless you’re shopping for drugs. That being said, there have been a fair amount of hold ups in Home Park in the last few years. I would recommend you either live somewhere other than HP (condos near 5th street are very nice, very safe but expensive), or else don’t be walking by yourself at night in HP. If you are a freshman, you’ll be living in the dorms—very safe. Public transportation is also very safe.

Thanks. I’m a grad student so I’m not sure about the dorms part.

Dorms are quite safe. GTPD patrols in the campus well and even the outskirts. They aren't renegade cops either, if you're walking drunk they will drive you home

Not nearly as bad as San Francisco and Seattle

SF is pretty safe apart from tenderlion

Got mugged in the first week of getting to GaTech. Stay on campus. Don’t go to home park!

Oracle blahbl OP Feb 28, 2019

Where did you get mugged? Home park?

Bloomberg <FON>User Feb 28, 2019

Hemphill Ave NW, behind Burger King.

You won't ever come across it. 20 years ago is a different story. Home Park sometimes has muggings but 99% of the crime around campus is of the smash and grab variety. Don't ever leave anything of value in your car and you'll be fine. Goes for all major cities, really.

As a recent student, the alerts were weekly at best (drive up, gun, mug wallet and phone). Pistol whippings as well

Oracle blahbl OP Feb 28, 2019

Isn’t an incident per week too high?

Oracle liv Feb 25, 2019

I've witnessed good amount of crime(including a shootout near my apartment) in Atlanta while studying there a couple of years back. You should be fine if you are wary of surrounding, go out in groups etc. Midtown area around GaTech is ok. Downtown and areas south of it are worse. North is much better.

I go to Georgia Tech. It depends on the neighborhood. You won’t have problem if you stay on campus most of the time. Stay away from Home Park.

Oracle blahbl OP Feb 26, 2019

Did you join fb directly after GT? What do you advise to do in college to get a good job later?

Facebook The-intern Feb 26, 2019

I interned there last year 😀 and got a return offer in the end.

Oracle giadgi Feb 28, 2019

Lived there for 16 years, in Brookhaven. Didn’t lock my doors. Didn’t go where i wasn’t supposed to and everything was fine. Like every major city, be smart.

Oracle blahbl OP Feb 28, 2019

What do you mean bu where you aren’t supposed to be? Are clubs and bars in the downtown okay places to go?

Microsoft gfba68 Feb 28, 2019

There are no clubs and cars downtown that you would want to go to. Downtown is a business and tourist district, nobody lives or goes out there. You'd be spending your time in midtown or along the east side beltline, which is fairly gentrified and probably a lot safer than wherever you live now. He is speaking specifically of the rough neighborhoods in southeast Atlanta, which you would never go to unless you livedbthere because there's nothing to do. Only exception might be castleberry hill, although even that is gentrifying rapidly
