I’m starting georgia tech this August and a bit worried about it’s crime rate. Is it really bad? Any tips?
Uh, no. Violent crime in Atlanta is localized to a few neighborhoods you will never see unless you’re shopping for drugs. That being said, there have been a fair amount of hold ups in Home Park in the last few years. I would recommend you either live somewhere other than HP (condos near 5th street are very nice, very safe but expensive), or else don’t be walking by yourself at night in HP. If you are a freshman, you’ll be living in the dorms—very safe. Public transportation is also very safe.
Don't do Molly in clubs, you will be fine. Go Jackets!!
What’s molly?
Thad Stanner's robot daughter.
Not nearly as bad as San Francisco and Seattle
SF is pretty safe apart from tenderlion
Got mugged in the first week of getting to GaTech. Stay on campus. Don’t go to home park!
Where did you get mugged? Home park?
Hemphill Ave NW, behind Burger King.
You won't ever come across it. 20 years ago is a different story. Home Park sometimes has muggings but 99% of the crime around campus is of the smash and grab variety. Don't ever leave anything of value in your car and you'll be fine. Goes for all major cities, really.
I've witnessed good amount of crime(including a shootout near my apartment) in Atlanta while studying there a couple of years back. You should be fine if you are wary of surrounding, go out in groups etc. Midtown area around GaTech is ok. Downtown and areas south of it are worse. North is much better.
I go to Georgia Tech. It depends on the neighborhood. You won’t have problem if you stay on campus most of the time. Stay away from Home Park.
Lived there for 16 years, in Brookhaven. Didn’t lock my doors. Didn’t go where i wasn’t supposed to and everything was fine. Like every major city, be smart.
What do you mean bu where you aren’t supposed to be? Are clubs and bars in the downtown okay places to go?
There are no clubs and cars downtown that you would want to go to. Downtown is a business and tourist district, nobody lives or goes out there. You'd be spending your time in midtown or along the east side beltline, which is fairly gentrified and probably a lot safer than wherever you live now. He is speaking specifically of the rough neighborhoods in southeast Atlanta, which you would never go to unless you livedbthere because there's nothing to do. Only exception might be castleberry hill, although even that is gentrifying rapidly
Stay strapped up
