Currently unemployed. Just got a job offer. Is it negotiable?

moved cities, quit old job and came to NYC without a job. got an offer. comp is good for what I was asking for. However my PTO days are 3 days less here than at my previous job. is it possible to negotiate while unemployed with no other offers? is it worth rocking the boat for only 3 days?

Yes!!! Do it 100%

No, not without a competing offer

Google d3j88wq Sep 18, 2019

Ok maybe, but only if they believe you'll choose to stay unemployed rather than accept their current offer.

Are you okay to remain unemployed if the offer is rescinded?

I can be. But I’d rather not. Unemployment is getting old and while having an extra 3 days a year would be nice, I’m thinking it’s my best bet to take the job and look to move in a year if the situation sucks. I was hoping to hear maybe anecdotes or learn something that I didn’t know by asking here.

The market can be rough on the unemployed. Companies try to screw you over a lot.

Everything’s negotiable. But is it worth it for 3 days?

Uber wodncu Sep 18, 2019

This. Over 3 days? It does not seem worth the risk, coming from a position of little to no leverage (unless you’re a rockstar, not info data points)

Ummm...hence why I included “But is it worth it for 3 extra days” in my post.

Always always negotiate. https://haseebq.com/my-ten-rules-for-negotiating-a-job-offer/

Everything is negotiable, as long as you have leverage

Roku cruella Sep 18, 2019

Or u get creative with the leverage. Preferring to not work over working for less than u wanted is also a kind of leverage

Taylor Farms azerty_ Sep 18, 2019

I support that

Negotiations for more vacation can come across as lazy ... the employers see many candidates. Some would ask for more money, better title, etc. If you negotiate for pto, it just give a bad impression. Start working there, anyway it will take you time before you take pto. Next review you’ll know if you can ask for more pto.

I agree with others to negotiate. The least you can do is ask and see what they say. If the answer is no, you can move forward knowing that you made the attempt.

Is an offer ever rescinded due to negotiation?

Taylor Farms azerty_ Sep 18, 2019

Yes. Sometimes they notice some things and could just back off

It’s a definite possibility. I’ve actually seen it happen to friends that got too cocky. That’s why I asked this here.
