Google L5 - 400k TC FB - 500k TC Airbnb - similar to FB (numbers not counting bonuses and refreshers) WLB is good at Google and work is reasonably interesting. Promo oportunities are harder to come by though. would be curious to get the perspective for those of you who made a similar move.
Working at Facebook is not easy especially at E6. You will work way harder than in google and will be more stressed.
I’ve heard that a lot, and wondering why that is. Is it because there’s a lot more scope and more things to do at L6? Too few headcount for too much work? I work a solid 40-50 hours/week right now. Nothing crazy but not slacking off either.
Facebook in general requires you to work more on the same level as google. You have an offer for one level higher so expect higher workload and pressure. On E6 you are expected to have a lot of technical contribution, mentoring, leading projects, etc. It's hard to do especially if you join as E6. You can always try and return to google though...
Airbnb. FB 6 would be much harder to survive than G 5
Also, you are on top band of L5. Did you have a very high initial offer or long yoe?
Depends what you value more, 550 extra hours a year or 55k extra post-tax $ a year.
How close are you to your cliff?
If WLB is important to you, this is probably the place to be TC will be comparable, maybe higher if you believe in our valuation
That’s good to know. WLB is a good thing as long as there is progress being made in making the company better, and not mostly people slacking off. Which one in your opinion applies to Airbnb?
I strongly agree with this + imo there's still progress being made
Stay at Google or go to Airbnb unless you want to work like a horse
When you say work like a horse, is it 996 like the chinese companies? What do most people spend their time on? Is it bec devs do a lot of operational work as well? (minimal/no SREs?) Or is it chasing some ambitious OKR? (Increase ads revenue for X product by Y%)
The reason why WLB is bad at FB is because of pressure to perform. If your teammates are pushing a diff every second, you feel pressured to otherwise you can’t keep up.
Yoe?
