I’m feeling really proud of myself today and I came here to say it. I grew up pretty poor. My dad is severely handicapped from being hit by a drunk driver and my mom is a teachers aid (makes $21k/year). When I was pretty young, my mom would often joke that we would be homeless one day. My family was supported by welfare. We had wood boards for floors. No oven, dishwasher, or hot water. I was one of those kids that got free lunches at school. One of those kids whose family could be “adopted” at Christmas time because my family couldn’t afford gifts. It wasn’t great. But I beat the odds and got out. I worked hard. Started working at 14, worked 2 jobs in high school and graduated top of my class, got in to a good school and double majored with honors. After college I started working in tech (marketing) and my career has taken off. 5 years later and I’m a woman in tech making $215K, living in a cool city (Denver) in a beautiful state, I own my house, and I drive a nice car. Sometimes I can’t believe it and how far I’ve come. Most people don’t know my background; I don’t often share it. They just assume I had a normal upbringing with parents who helped me with everything, paid for college, helped me buy my house, etc. But that’s not the case. I did this all by myself. This was me. I fought for it all. And I’m proud. That’s all. Tc: $215K (just salary not including equity) Yoe: 5 Edit: Of course I am helping my parents now. I’m very close with my mom. I send them money every month. I pay for their cell phone bills. I pay for a nurse to come care for my dad when my moms at work. I’m helping my mom get a new car in the new year. Long term plan is to get them a better place to live that’s more accessible for my dad. Edit 2: Cause some of you are asking…I just got married this year to my partner of 6 years :)
Congratulations!! You should be proud, enjoy and may you find continuous happiness and fulfillment
