Facebook Phone Interview Feedback

Recently had a phone interview with FB/Meta (for a DS-related role). Was able to solve the coding questions and other parts as well (interviewer mentioned that it was correct and my approach to other questions were right.) However, the recruiter reached out to me that they will not move on with my application. Anyone had a similar experience? Any ideas on what might have gone wrong or what is going on? How many questions did you solve?

Amazon JnmO05 OP Dec 2, 2021

There were 4 questions - 2 coding and 2 case studies. Was able to solve both coding and both case studies.

Is it for SWE role?

Communication? Explaining code consistently? Talking about edge cases?

Amazon JnmO05 OP Dec 2, 2021

Had no issues with communication. Also was able to explain my code and the interviewer seemed satisfied. She mentioned that it was correct. Do you still think there was an issue?

from what you described, it looks good to me

Similar experience. Solved both questions on time. Got rejected. Could be any number of reasons - coding style didn't meet expectations, explanation didn't meet expectations, interviewer was having a bad day, etc. No use wasting time and energy reflecting on it

Amazon JnmO05 OP Dec 2, 2021

I guess we have a similar experience. This really sucks. I was able to explain everything in detail so I really don't understand why I was rejected.

Amazon loyala Dec 2, 2021

I will tell you one thing, doesn't matter how many LC you did, when it comes to explaining an issue, lot of folks take it wrong....work on communications

Amazon JnmO05 OP Dec 2, 2021

It wasn't about communication - I was able to communicate with the interviewer without a problem

Hi Amazon, how did you prep for the questions? Were they SQL?

Amazon JnmO05 OP Dec 2, 2021

You can use SQL. It's honestly not that difficult you can google questions

Strange thing happened with me recently, in my phone screen I was given 2 questions both kinda sorta LC Medium solved both explained the idea as well didn't got much time to cover lot of edge cases but I will say did a tad decent job. The result was I was told the interview was inconclusive 😕 never heard of this before. I was told to appear for another one and again 2 question 1 was LC Medium and the other one was I believe Hard not sure but was damn tricky. I solved both again with similar level of explanation as before. The result was I got through the phone screen. Not sure why was I told to appear for phone screen twice back to back.

Amazon JnmO05 OP Dec 2, 2021

So do you think I was just unlucky here? I know that my code was correct and i was able to explain what my code is doing and she said it was right.

EPAM Systems $uthred Dec 2, 2021

Seems so, it's just hard luck. Sometimes interviewer also fucks up or may be didn't like something and just rejected you for nothing who is gonna check or verify BTW I had a worse experience with Amazon the interviewer gave me a LC question which was not even complete, I mean important bits and pieces missing. The bloddy sentence was incomplete 🙄 and when I started asking question he wasn't even able to answer them properly. What he expected was that I knew the question from before hand I just solve it without asking any questions and get done with it. Definitely not able to give a running solution but was able to come up a correct approach and still got rejected 🤪

Mine was worse, I got a phone call from a recruiter from Facebook the first time, then she said she's going to ask me some technical questions, I said I'm not ready for a interview yet and can I prepare the interview please, then she said no no this is not a interview , just some simple questions so that I can help you prepare the interview. So I said ok , then she asked all kinds of questions, I got about 80% , missed like 20%. Then she emailed me a week later that she will move on with other candidate.....

Wow FB recruiters know DS SWE so well

wtf that is such a weird situation. was it FB? mine said explicitly in the email that the first call will be a non-technical recruiter call

They interview like 100s of candidates for 1 position. I know this because interviewers reach out to so many people and get them to interview. The bar is extremely high even though the questions may seem simple and you may have answered them correctly. From my experience they need flawless answers.

Amazon JnmO05 OP Dec 2, 2021

That totally makes sense. But AFAIK they told me that they are hiring multiple people (it wasn't really a specific opening for a specific team) and do team matching later. Still

EPAM Systems $uthred Dec 2, 2021

I doubt that @qqqqoo I have recently cleared first round interview with few from FAANG and what I experienced is that I was never able to give a flawless answer in almost all the cases and made mistakes in every one of them but corrected it towards the end and had even got hints to correct few silly mistakes. Yet I cleared them. What I can say is the discussion is very important as in almost all my cases I started off with some sort of brute force dirty solution first which worked but with worse possible Time/Space complexity and then improved it with coming up with a more optimized approach later on or improving the existing one itself. Thinking out loud has helped me alot and also it does depend on the interviewer as well.

Sorry to hear OP. Was this a phone interview or on the Zoom? I thought the technical interview is normally done via Zoom. They’ll only call you if the connection was bad or Zoom didn’t work. Also, it could be that your career goals don’t align with what they are looking for?
