Will Apple take a big chunk after launching?

Apple lIRa33 OP Mar 17, 2019

I sure hope so

I feel like a lot of people will pay for both

Apple lIRa33 OP Mar 17, 2019

Initially yes... but six months down the lane people will reevaluate

I used to spend $50 for cable subscription. Now I only spend on Netflix, cancelled everything else. I will probably add Disney as well and probably HBO as well and still be spending less than I used to. Tbh with good content I’ll be ok with monthly $50-60 for entertainment. IMO there is room for a few great quality services. I would not cancel Netflix anytime tho.

I will probably cancel Netflix. There is almost nothing on there for my kids except Disney owned content and most of the shows I watch aren't what I would consider quality cinema. I might start doing the sign up for a month and watch a show that just released and then cancel thing when something like lost in space gets new episodes.

I think that Netflix customers who want the Disney SVOD will utilize both simultaneously for a short period of time. I am confident that Disney will launch with some form of free trial, which would make a service comparison possible for all Netflix customers. I also think that if forced to make a decision between the two SVODs, most existing Netflix subs would prioritize Netflix for the below (unordered) reasons. 1) Price tiers provide options to downgrade if the current tier is too expensive. 2) Ubiquity of the service / app (webapp, phone, tablet, Apple TV, Android TV, PlayStation, etc.) 3) Catalog breadth and depth. One could argue that Disney also has this, but would they have content for most genres and subgenres? Horror, Film Noir, Gay? (Not suggesting these genres are related!) 4) US + Global Content. I last heard about 60% of Netflix's subs are outside the US. This is likely in part due to Netflix's deliberate global content development strategy and not just the availability of the service in other countries. Whereas Disney (at least for now) has a stable of content and characters that are very much US-centric. Korean horror? Turkish sci fi? Australian spy thriller? 5) Dependability. Netflix just works (thanks to tech stack, Monkeywrench disaster prep / mitigation) I wish Disney the best. It will be a fun fight!

No. They won’t. It’ll take a bigger chunk out of cable instead. Netflix is like google now. You can’t beat them. Recommendations is excellent and original content is outstanding. Now if someone can consolidate all steaming services into a seamless single subscription through a single device (ahem, how about it, Apple?), that would be interesting. Linear cable is dead. Streaming is the future. Movie studios will be like music studios producing content for multiple streaming services.

I dunno, Netflix keeps recommending shitty Netflix originals to me

Apple 867530nine Mar 17, 2019

It’s been solid for me. Been a customer forever though so they ought to have learned my preferences by now.

Disney+ vs. Netflix is like candy store vs grocery store. It can be fun and exciting for kids, but it's not a go-to destination for adults. Disney content is PC, PG, predictable. They won't even put adult content there in order not to hurt the brand. Netflix, on the contrary, is pushing the limit on all fronts. Love, Death and Robots is a masterpiece just released on Netflix. It's a prime example of what Netflix can do and Disney cannot.

I don’t agree with content quality and recommendation system for Netflix. Their suggestions are awful atleast for me. House of cards and stranger things are the exceptions here..
