Offer evaluation: Databricks, Roblox, Palantir, MSFT

Hi everyone! Graduating soon and need some advice. Which one should I pick? Also, if anybody knows the bands for these roles, is there room for negotiation (specifically Databricks)? How is career progression at these companies? Where could I hit senior the fastest? Edit: This post is getting a lot of replies with questions directed to me specifically, and I can't read them all, so please feel free to DM instead Microsoft (Level 59) Redmond, WA: Cash: $118,400 Stock: $30,000/yr Signing: $10,000 Total: $158,400 Roblox (IC1) San Mateo, CA: Cash: $152,500 Stock: $72,500/yr Bonus: $9,300 Total: $234,000 Palantir, Palo Alto, CA (might be able to negotiate location): Cash: $145,000 Stock: $45,000 Bonus: $45,000 Total: $235,000 Databricks (L3) Bellevue, WA: Cash: $133,000 Stock: ~$68906 based on last valuation Bonus: $25,000 Annual performance bonus: $13,300 Total: $240,206 --- TC: $0 #engineering #software #swe #career

Bullish on databricks, not sure about the promo process Since you’re just starting out, you’re in a position to take huge risks and hopefully it pays out really well in the future

Spotify manjaro Sep 29, 2023

Why bullish ? I personally like real money

Airbnb mdeybkudt Sep 29, 2023

Databricks will bring much more money to his pocket than SPOT or similar companies

Expedia Group what a way Sep 27, 2023

some impressive new grad offers! congrats

Microsoft notasofty OP Sep 27, 2023

Thank you :)

Axon Dusty🚮 Sep 29, 2023

Where did you go to school?

Nordstrom ehk366 Sep 27, 2023

How was Palantir decomp and learning interview?

Microsoft notasofty OP Sep 27, 2023

I would be a returning intern, but it was easy for me. As long as you've built an app of your own before you should be fine.

Roblox BUDp63 Sep 27, 2023

Roblox does not have bonus

Google UOMN40 Sep 27, 2023

Thanks for sharing. No yearly cash bonus and stock refresh?

Microsoft notasofty OP Sep 27, 2023

Yeah I haven't actually received their numbers yet, just estimating and copying levels since I haven't gotten the letter.

Databricks mmmmn Sep 27, 2023

Databricks generally doesn’t negotiate new grad offers. It’s a very good offer though.

Microsoft notasofty OP Sep 27, 2023

Not even a little bit?

Databricks mmmmn Sep 27, 2023

You’re welcome to try, but I’m pretty sure they’re standardized. And at the moment, there are many many more talented new grads than positions available.

ex-SpaceX pip evader Sep 27, 2023

Stay away from palantir, it’s a shitshow

Microsoft notasofty OP Sep 27, 2023

I interned there; why do you feel this way?

Palantir NFuI22 Sep 28, 2023

Eh, it's pretty good most places internally at Palantir. It all depends where you land. Sure there are some corners of the company that suck, but that's the same at most places in big tech. Especially if you're joining Product Development it's a good environment. Databricks being privately held is the real deal breaker for me. You do not want to be in the situation of holding equity in a private company you cannot sell for years/a decade before you get any value out of it. Been there and it was awful, even if luckily worked out for me at Palantir.

Roblox Broblox Sep 27, 2023

I wouldn't count on Roblox surviving before you become a senior.

Microsoft notasofty OP Sep 27, 2023

It's a speculative company but continues to pay top-notch.

Roblox nevermorre Sep 28, 2023

I would normally advise against for IC4+ folks but for a recent graduate, Roblox can be a great place.

Roblox jdafkas01 Sep 28, 2023

Echo other people on Roblox. I think it sucks for upper ICs, but you can grab a lot of scope as a new grad and touch a lot of different fields. You’re coming it a good price too (I think Wallstreet finally settled on our price. I think in the earnings report they mentioned they’re dropping employee expenses, so surprised you still got that offer. Only join engine and Creator. Id only consider Databricks and Roblox. Although I heard Databricks is more of a grind, but potentially more growth. Although who knows if I’m recession businesses will still buy Databricks

Meta margaritav Sep 29, 2023

Why does it suck for high level ICs?

Roblox jdafkas01 Sep 30, 2023

For higher ICs, its much harder to promote since we most hire at hire-in levels. There's definitely a lot of interesting projects, but it's very top down from C-level downwards on what we can or can't do. They're very particular. Also our infra kinda sucks right now lol, so if you're an experienced engineer who worked at FAANG or any other decent tech focused company (Uber/Lyft/Airbnb etc)you'll probably hate that. Roblox is much older but hasn't invested in Infra until our IPO

VMware asfgdz Sep 28, 2023

Finally, an offer post

Meta NqgR43 Sep 29, 2023

Happy for them but still makes me want to shoot myself as I can’t even get any interviews as a new grad.

Paper duck 2 Sep 29, 2023

"Meta" Ppl never gonna be happy

Roblox hijabtaaj Sep 28, 2023

Hey what is the valuation of databricks you are talking about, based on which you have been offered? They are hell bent on not lowering their sky-high valuation from the pandemic time, whereas Instacart is currently valued at one-forth of what it was valued at in 2021.

Google UOMN40 Sep 28, 2023

Databricks valuation from the latest round on Sep 2023 (yes, this month) is 43B, which is higher than the valuation 38B at the pandemic time

Roblox hijabtaaj Sep 28, 2023

I came to know about the latest round just now.
