Dallas to Bay Area Move

Currently working at Citibank in Dallas with a TC of 200K. I have 2 offers with me now Company : Capital One Location: Dallas Expected TC - ~260K Company: Meta (E5) Location: Bay Area Expected TC : ~400K ( dont have numbers still in team match) I am a sole earner in family with one kid. I am very confused on moving to bay due to HCOL and quality of life. But at the same time Meta on my resume might open good opportunities for me in future. Is it worth moving to bay area for Meta ? #swe #software #engineering #meta #bayarea

Are you on visa? Reason I am asking is capital one doesn’t hire someone on a visa.

Ask Meta to move your location to Austin

Austin doesn't have much team. Most are enterprise engineering roles or data center roles. Most of the dev teams are in Menlo Park or Seattle or NYC

Lots of things to consider from school districts, commute, house prices, culture, community, what your family prefers…

I'd recommend the move.

If it’s 13 then for sure do not make the move. You’re mid-career and the ROI is not going to be there. I feel Bay Area is good for early-career. Make money and get out because living here is shit.

I am doing it, moving from similar LCOL to Bay, similar situation. Going from $200 to $300 and we still are coming out ahead. Do it and don’t look back

dont

I own my house and am renting it out here. Who cares about owning a home? We come out ahead in every $$ metric and that’s before my first refresher.

Microsoft spoiledev Mar 12

If you are well settled in dfw I don’t think you should move. 260K is pretty good for dfw.

Guidewire c000lguy Mar 12

don't move if you are planning to buy a home. with single income of 400k buying a home is difficult in bay area. 400k is considered below poverty level.

Google VLOq02 Mar 12

True $400k is kinda tight for a family of 3. The Bay Area is a neoliberal nightmare where the public sector is gutted and unreliable so you pay both taxes and later private costs once it is revealed there are no real services to speak of.

400k is tight if you wanna buy a house. If renting is ok, it is more than enough.

Move if you don't have any real estate plans

I think you should add in a poll. But think you should move. Care to tell me about the interview experience?
