Don’t join Uber. Shittiest leadership ever. The guy lay-off ppl in waves.
Yeah wouldn't touch Uber with a 50 foot pole at this point.
Well; maybe pay cuts won’t save jobs. Why is it impossible that’s true?
Don’t see the problem here
“Some” managers offering pay cuts is not all. I guarantee if they cut all managers salaries by 15% to save an employee that is an underperformed, you’ll have mass attrition. It isn’t guaranteed that all the golden superstars would be saved, if they were really superstars, they wouldn’t be part of the chosen ones to get layers off.
I think the point everyone is missing is that these layoff decisions are not just to save some cash in the short term. And your salary is not the only expense for the company - there is so much more like you insurance, 401k match, you equipment, office space, etc. which add up to a lot more than your salary. Its not like the C suite loves the negative PR and reputation hit that comes with layoffs, these decisions are mostly taken because it's inevitable. And keep in mind that most of these CEOs are empire builders ( no one wants to run a smaller company). So having 25% less employees is not great for their ego either and is done to ensure they have a much bigger company in the future.
Ding ding ding Amazon gets it. Everyone thinks it's an easy choice of save money for short term. Uber has more cash than many companies in the bank. The burn rate of the actual dollars is pretty small compared to what's reported in the news (ex. Our burn was reported as ~2bn last quarter, ~700MM was actual cash). What these layoffs reflect is future strategic shifts.
Yup, the reason we are not taking a pay cut is because we are not short of money in the near term, which is what pay cut addresses. It’s about strategic shift in resources for the next 2-3 years.
I love how non-Uber employees are such experts with internal discussions and leadership motives. This was discussed at AH. It doesn't make sense to keep people that have seen their day to day tasks evaporate. No amount of paycut or furlough would fix that. There's no way to know when the rides side of the business is going to return to normal IF ever. There's an indefinite hiring freeze, a paycut or furlough wouldnt just make work appear for recruiters and support staff. I could go on and on with the list of jobs and projects cut but you get the idea. I feel our leadership including Dara have done a good job. Our severance package is very generous, everyone laid off is keeping their laptops and phones, 10 weeks pay + 2 weeks for every year + COBRA paid for. I'm unfamiliar with Intel's severance package but I'd be curious.
Thanks for the perspective from someone who actually knows better. How is your team doing in these times?
Found Dara’s account. Lol seriously though, I really want Uber to succeed, and I believe in the vision of the company. They need to get better leaders though, I can’t believe it’s more or less the same as when Travis was CEO, minus the misogynistic culture (glad he is gone for sure)
Wont pay cut put Visa employees at risk?
Actually Dara is an exceptional CEO just shows how ill informed you are... may be do some research , see interviews , his decisions and take a call ? .... severance package is very generous, everyone laid off is keeping their laptops and phones, 10 weeks pay + 2 weeks for every year + COBRA paid for. also every one gets three months recruitung support and H1b gets additional 1 month transition work to be on payroll and attorney support from fragomen attorneys to help discuss options .....
Works for SAP, shits on Uber CEO. Looks like slackers already taking wfh for granted.
This is kinda random but I always see people from SAP shitting on faangs lol. What is SAP
Giant monolithic erp software company Pretty much every f500 company uses it Its runs line 75% of the world’s financial transactions and like 90% of the world’s food supply chain <===== ex sap consultant
Well Uber is not FAANG 🤷♀️ On a side note, SAP is a really huge company. Similar to Cisco, IBM, it's a giant which operates behind the scenes in B2B settings so if you only look at consumer facing software and hardware you would not see it in action but at the end of the day it is more critical to businesses and therefore people than Amazon (AWS excluded) and Apple even
