How Instagram ads work sometimes baffles me. Scenarios ( no coincidence - ruled out that possibility) a. I was searching for BMW cars on my laptop in incognito mode. I see BMW ads on Instagram app. b. I write reviews on Google maps about a recent restaurant I visited. I see Instagram ads of restaurants of that cuisine. c. I search for few products on Amazon app. Guess what!?? I see Instagram ads. Not to forget ads using speech recognition when talking to partner or frnds. Above scenarios mentioned were just me and no mention around anyone around me. P.S: I’m not from software background and related to management. So avoid roast. Trying to learn something.
They don’t listen (audio), they do get info about activity on other websites, and they have your phone and your friends phones geo data, so if someone you spend time types or searches something then you may get ads from it if the algorithm thinks you should get that targeted ad too. They know a lot about you
Why do you say they don't listen? I have many experiences where I was talking about something and right after that was shown ads in instagram or some other app that shows ads. Our phones are always listening. 👂
I agree. They do listen. Even I had so many instances ever I see ads based on conversation I had. I have dumpy tried this too where we frnds purposely emphasized about a product and voila we had ads
Honestly what's the point of Instagram. Everything is so fake, all the influencers are fake, the photos are fake with filters and what not. Ads are for fake products.
That’s not the point of discussion
I guess my point is most Instagram users are pretty dumb to think through so much.

Read internal docs we have. Google does similar things too. Remarketing etc
You can’t if you don’t have access and it’s awkward to ask for it from another team.
Nah remarketing can't explain this.. incognito mode will kill remarketing no.
So your theory is that google doesn’t respect user privacy and sends this information from chrome and google maps app? Why would google do this?
This is a coincidence, not technical magic. A) did you give your info to BMW? B) not sure how this is related? But you likely took your phone to the restaurant. C) Oh for sure, Amazon is retargeting you based on your searches. There is no voice tracking. You can open up off fb activity and see all the apps and data sent to fb (including from blind) and delete it if you would like including prevent future connections. This will lead to generic ads. Contrary to the memes fb let's you both see and control all of your data.
a. I didn’t not fill any information on bmw sites or similar. Just searched for cars. b. Yes took my phone to restaurant c. Yes I have Amazon and Instagram app on my phone
B - location data is good enough. It's the fact that you went there and not that you wrote a review. C - the ad on Instagram was targeted by Amazon. Fb had nothing to do with it; it just sent the ad to the targeted audience. Check custom audiences.
Why blame Instagram. You are spending more time on Instagram than general web browsing. You see targeted ads everywhere on web. While droom scrolling on IG, you actually notice those ads which are shown to you on other web pages you visited. Even if you let go of Facebook family of apps, you have Google, Amazon, Apple, LinkedIn using your data to show you targeted ads. More so, there are tonnes of other DSPs capitalizing on users data to show targeted ads. Yes, all those smart devices and phones are listening to you all times. Check the settings to turn off I work in ad tech and I hate it. Can’t wait to leave.
does this apply even when searching in incognito? I ensure to use incognito everytime. But recently don’t find it useful and get loaded with ads
Incognito only stops the browser from storing cookies after the session ends. It doesn’t stop the websites you visit from telling Google/FB “this IP address visited this page at this time”
This is exactly right. Many ways to “track” even in incognito mode. E.g.: https://tech.hindustantimes.com/tech/news/you-are-tracked-even-when-you-are-using-incognito-mode-on-google-chrome-google-makes-it-clear-71615813736993.html
How does a Google employee not understand adtech at even a nominal level?
The point here is incognito.
Because 100% googlers work in ads.
IP?
