Joining Amazon next week as a L4 data engineer. I currently work at a start up with not great tech stack. Looking for any pointers/advice from fellow data engineers at Amazon to be successful. TC : 220k @Amazon
Follwing. I am joining L4 BIE next week too. Can I DM for a couple of questions?
Sure
What do you mean by not great tech
Ssis for ETL Ssrs for reporting Still do a lot of manual scripts.
Oh ok, There will be a learning curve. Tech stack would depend on the team, but expect AWS, python, spark, SQL (probably redshift), orchestration (eg. Airflow). All of the above are easy to pickup if you know SQL and python.
Thanks, I leant python ( udemy and leetcode easy)
What is your location for Amazon?
Seattle
Congrats OP. Couple of things: 1. 220k is a fantastic offer for L4 DE at Amazon. I have not seen that kind of offer for L4 ever. Not very long ago, 220k used to be a okaish offer for L5 SDE. 2. If you do not have coding experience, how did you clear the coding interview round for DE? 3. Amazon DE role can be very diverse. A lot of Amazon DEs just write SQL, aggregates data, build dashboards etc. They are in reality works in BIE scope. 4. But there are lot of DEs who build frameworks, streaming applications, big data pipelines. These DEs are the industry standard DEs, and they work exactly same way as SDEs, only difference is they build and work in Data Systems. However in most cases these kind of DE scope is rather given to SDE teams in Amazon. So, depending on your interest, pay attention to the scope of your team and change teams (or move to SDE role) if things don’t look good. 5. Things you will most likely need to use right away as DE: AWS, SQL, Python, Spark, Redshift, Internal Data platforms.
Thanks. I wanted L5 but they gave me L4 I think one behavior round was ok not great. I did not have coding experience, knew sql. Took up a python course in udemy and worked on 50 easy leetcode. Also courses on spark and cloud computing basics. So I have theoretical knowledge to do well on interviews but no real time exp with python and spark. Really appreciate your reply. I will start reading up on the topics you mentioned. Aim is to get to L5 as soon as I can.
Good luck 👍🏽
@OP can you please share the thee resource you used to prepare for your Amazon interview.I got one coming up
Do you know how does L4 map to IC4 at meta? Heard Amazon levels are a bit different and always confused by it
Amazon L4 = Meta E3 Amazon L5 = Meta E4 + lower end of E5 Amazon L6 = Most of E5 + Most of E6
you’re the best, I’d give you a referral to albertsons if I could
