Is there any difference between "Data Engineer" and "Software Engineer, Data Engineering" job titles, or are they just labels chosen by hiring teams? If there are differences, could you please elaborate on them? Thanks! #tech #dataengineer #swe #google #hrt #bolt #adyen #amazon #meta #apple #uber
It depends. At amazon you get pigeon holed into data b1tch as a DE. At FB, same thing but more technical. At microsoft it depends on team but you are paid same and have more swe opportunity
I was a DE like 8 years ago there and it was worse than meta for the same reasons. All eng work goes to SDEs. Crappy sql work goes to DE in high volumes
Yes accurate. I would avoid de if possible and def avoid bie/da
Real answer here: data engineer builds data pipelines for internal tools. Examples: the business analytic, BI dashboards, employee data, etc. It is not a good role, stay away from it SWE data engineering builds real product and focus on the AI-training data or consumer data In some companies, these titles are the same. But it’s better to distinguish them.
Thinking about going into DE. But your comments is scary. Why is it not a good role please
DE is a SQL monkey. It supports data scientist / analytics. Pay is lower than SWE

Depends on the company and the team. The roles could overlap significantly or be completely different. I know data engineers who do essentially backend SWE and devops work, and data engineers who work with no-code ETL tools. I’d imagine a SWE in a data engineering team might be working on foundational data pipelining software or on internal tools for the analytics org
