Hey! Wondering if anyone has advice on learning coding for data science/machine learning. Which program/online learning tools are best (and cheap)? Which language(s)? I have an MBA and a master's in biostats (both from a top 20 school) and compared to the debt I'm in, the salary I make in a big city is really stressing me out. I learned some entry-level R, SAS, SQL in school, I'm good at statistics and picking up coding, but would like to be more competitive for these positions and eventually work remote in a lower cost city. Ideally would like to work in health care but supporting myself is most important at this point.
You can still work in healthcare. That industry uses a lot of machine learning for diagnosis, organ donor matching and things of the like. Go through the entire Data Scientist track on DataCamp.com just to learn the absolute bare minimum basics. After that, move on to more advanced courses in Coursera or Udemy. I would strongly suggest getting a mentor or joining a group, doing Kaggle competitions (non-competitively, just to get reps in), and have group members critique your analysis. It will take you months to become beginner level, over a year to be intermediate. Don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s a magic bullet that will catapult you into high TC with minimal effort.
Thanks so much! I definitely will put in the work. I'll be on a train for 2 hours a day spon so might as well work on learning stuff. Thanks for the recs
Just make sure it’s on a laptop doing actual coding on the train. Reading/mobile apps won’t give you the coding muscle memory. Good luck!

Fast.ai is an excellent resource aimed at delivering a practical and hands on approach to learning the development chops to become effective in ML. I've had a number of my engineers go through it to develop their data science chops (most came from tech stacks outside the data space, so their existing tech skills were only of nominal benefit).
Awesome I will look into it! Thanks!
I got good results with Dataquest and Kaggle. I preferred the learning by doing approach over books and videos I tried, and I’d recommend python.
Thank you! I forgot about Kaggle
GBDT, Keras, off you go!

youre in a good spot, especially with the stats bg. start learning python and i recommend Python Data Science handbook by Jake Vanderplas and Python for Data Analysis by Wes Mckinney. good luck.
Thank you!!!
