My friend wants to pursue career in data science. Wanted to know the best universities in Seattle, California and new York? How is the job market for data science? Is MIS good enough for pursuing data science or need to go for MS in CS? Will data science major be tough to pursue? Does it need pre reqs if coming from non computers background? TC 120k Yoe 4
Only thing that’s actually good is a phd. Rest all garage or near garbage. You just use some tools or package and do what you are told.
Nah. It's weird to see people without PhDs doing research, but they certainly can be. Though most data scientists, even the "real" ones as you might call them, don't work on anything that fringe anyway. With MS, key is to recruit only top of class grads who have curiosity enough to read papers on their own. Plus you'll get more of a chance of a hire able to work effectively with other teams, which in most of DS is mandatory. Too many snobby tangentially related PhDs in this field if anything...
I agree.
Don't get an MIS degree if you want to go into data science.
If you want to do X, why would you get a degree in Y and not in X...?
Depends on what form of data science they want to do- data analytics or ML? If you want to do ML you’re not getting far with a masters, we pretty much recruit phds only for our research scientists. Data scientists on product teams are more analytics and can get away with a masters and in that case a data science degree is definitely better
No MIS. It is super easy to get in and people look down upon such degrees.
NYU has a DS master's, not sure about the outcomes but the professors in that department do top notch work. They tend to be much more mathematically focused though.
MS isn't long enough to not be mathematically focused. Would say stats during the degree is the most important part since it's the hardest component to learn to a base level on your own
I’m graduating from that program in a month. It’s more focused on AI/ML theory and applications so a bit of math and CS. The stats side is almost nonexistent.
At MS, there are all kinds of data scientists. Including some who are excel ninjas and that is all they are good at. If you want to have a job where you are not told what to do, rather you figure out what it is that needs to be done, then you need training that will get you fluent in modern statistical thinking. Classical theory, modern methods, and applied experience. Doesn't really matter what the degree is in, as long as you have a masters in statistics from one of the top 5 schools (UW, Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Stanford or CMU) level training. If you don't have that training or willing to put in the work to get it, eventually someone will figure out that you are BSing your way.
‘Your friend’
Yeah m already done with my masters don't want to get another one
