Little under two years and stuck in a dead end role. Joining the role was my mistake. Got a bit greedy for the google name. I tried transferring to either the PA or SWE ladder. SWE ladder I didn’t have a team willing to interview me and got rejected on the PA interview. In my current role I do only SQL and some basic internal tooling I have offers in the 200-250k range(SWE / DE roles) at startups outside google. These are fully remote so I can work from anywhere. 2022 TC is likely around 240k. Should I leave? My role is basically string of CMEs , entire team leaving the company etc . Manager is unwilling to support any kind of career growth. Scared to leave the google brand mostly for smaller companies ….
Can I ask which team or org you are in?
DM me
What, if any, was the feedback re the rejection from the PA team?
What is your role? Data Analyst?
i’m in the exact same situation, decided to leave but waiting for an offer with good startup equity and proper 4 year vesting to stay motivated next time around
Sorry you’re stuck, might as well leave. You can always come back.
People have weird ideas about what SQL represents. SQL is a powerful tool that can let you do a lot of important things. I understand that very often it is used as a simple tool to do basic things, but you should decide whether your issue is that you're doing basic things or that you're doing X things when you want to be doing Y things. Anyway I don't see much of a point at staying at Google. You might even have an easier time boomerang-ing.
Well as a data engineer most companies require you to know a lot of software engineering. All my previous DE roles were all software engineering roles. It’s also so boring to keep writing queries all day long
No way- all of my previous DE jobs involved a lot of python, data ingestion ( kinesis), AWE, ML production etc
What is your current role ?
Data engineer
