I am a data scientist who enjoys doing statistical data analysis, building models, experiments.. dashboard development, etc..., There were some complex data engineering / big data tasks that I never did before or has experience with and I tried for a week and realized I can't do it as I have to speed too much time on learning and I told my Tech lead that I can't take this and complete it in this sprint as I am not familiar with tech stack nor much interested in this kind of task. I told my tech lead that there are other people on the team who can do it better and quicker than me and I will work on another task ... She immediately told ok and communicated to my manager that I am not accepting assigned tasks and my manager called me to ask for my concerns and I explained to him... I am not sure what that tech lead told my manager and I never expected it would be escalated and I felt like my manager was not happy after the one on one meeting... What do I do? how to deal with this situation? #culture #officelife #workplace TC 80K

Wow. I never heard someone saying NO to a project. Is that common?
Ya.. we push back on some projects that I donāt want to work on.. a good manager tries to put the employees on the projects they like (as much as they can afford to do so)
I didn't say no directly...I tried for a week but I couldn't do it... Never used spark prog language but I had to implement some tasks using spark.. :(
I think itās more about you learning to test the waters before wading in. Since you are not in a position to choose stories, itās more appropriate to convey what you want to do without saying no or suggesting alternatives. You suggesting alternate folks to work on tasks only undermines your tech leads ability to assign tasks to his team members. Not saying the tech lead is in the right here. But a blunt no, is a strict No No.

Seems like the typical office politics in play here bud. Best thing to do in this situation (if you enjoy what youāre doing at this co) is to keep up your usual motivation/work ethic. If you find that your TL is continuing to be awkward and telling your manager about your smallest slip ups, you could speak with them to see if this is a competence issue on their part or if there is something deeper rooted. Additionally, if you find the office politics and jostling for position tiresome, do not hesitate to look elsewhere. Lifeās to short to be mismanaged by a crowd of simps in the workplace. Itās not good for you or your career to put up and settle with such bullshit.
