Got laid off from Google this year and recently started a new role at JPMC, which will require relocating to Plano, TX. Since I started, I somehow managed to get two new offers. Now I don’t know what to do. Current (new) role: JPMC - level: 603 / VP / L6 Staff equivalent - base: $160k - bonus: $30k - TC year 1: $190k - location: Plano Offer 1: Google - level: L4 - base: $150k - bonus: 15% - equity: $220k - sign on: $50k - TC year 1: ~ $305k less paying back severance so like $240k - location: Seattle Offer 2: Pinterest - level: L5 - base: $210k - equity: $330k - sign on: $20k - TC year 1: ~ 310k - location: Seattle G already laid me off once, not sure I don’t trust that to happen again especially since HM was concerned about keeping the head count. Pinterest has already had two rounds of layoffs and while the HM thinks the position is secure, these layoffs always seem to come from much higher up. On paper, the money, at least for the short term, is better in tech, but who knows if that will only be a couple months, and I don’t want to be fighting to find a job again anytime soon. JPMC seems much less likely to have sweeping layoffs unless the economy gets dramatically worse and at that point the tech jobs would have already laid me off. I can also get a bigger house, better schools, for less money than what I have in Seattle, despite the interest rates and higher property taxes. I’ve got a family to think about, so am I crazy for sticking to the lowest paying role in favor of stability? YOE: 3, TC $190k #layoffs #google #pinterest #jpmorgan #offers #layoff #severance

Help Needed: Choosing Between Offers
G
Hey how was your Pinterest onsite interview may I ask? Also L5 at 310K seems low? Have they reduced their offers?
Asking coz I just interviewed
It was good, pretty easy. Not an ENG role, so lower TC
You will both work more and get paid less at JP
What are people working on over there?
Endless data center migrations 😂 Copy paste the app from one place to the next. In a year you’ll be moving your apps again guaranteed.
This is a classic example of the problem in the current economy. Companies in this market think they deserve to get candidates 2x their standards. What they don't realize is that those very candidates will leave as soon as a better offer comes up, just like OP does. Nothing wrong from the candidates perspective, but it makes the situation worse for people like me whose resume gets overlooked because of unreal expectations from HM.
Sounds like online dating. Replace current economy with dating. Companies in this market with women online. Candidates with decent men. Replace people like me with average male
Can you just say what you mean? Too much cognitive load to replace words
Work at both JPMC and Pinterest, keep severance from G and then let JPMC fire you after however long. Save up that money as contingency in case of another layoff. This is the way.
Go to Pinterest, get the level bump, and if you get laid off again, at least you'll have the level on your resume.
This, and clear JPMC from your LinkedIn
Do you like the team and work in jp? 190k is a lot in Dallas.
I really like the team/org and the area seems to have strong job security and career growth potential. Things move a bit more slowly, but everyone seems to know this and accept it. Also it seems like I’m seeing more ex FAANG ending up here, just seems to be where some of the market is migrating.
Your thought of school is spot on. I'd put more weight on this topic.
If not obvious jomc is a dead end, plano tx is a black hole
Baking recession is around the corner bro with interest rate trouble
If you leave jpmc when you’re under 6 months, when you eventually leave the next job you’ll need to treat that as a gap and just not mention jpmc. Not the end of the world just something to consider. Personally Pinterest is my vote.
or you can just say it wasn’t a fit and you left rather than be miserable. one or even 2 such cases aren’t a problem. having a pattern is the problem
I think people will understand that you got laid off, took something because you needed it, and then went back to big tech because that’s where you wanted to be.
