I’m tired of grinding at AWS and looking for an exit. I’m fine with working hard but I do not find Amazon interesting anymore. I no longer love what I’m doing and the culture is wrecking my mental health. Recently a couple of Meta recruiters reached out but I want to take views of fellow blinders before jumping into anything. My background is backend and I want to stay there. I understand from reading few posts that Meta isn’t a luxury train ride but as long as the problems are interesting and the org has less toxic culture than Amazon I should be good. What are some of the healthy/less toxic and profitable orgs in Meta right now? Based on recruiter reach outs I can interview with AI, WhatsApp, messenger, instagram, monetization, reality labs, newsfeed. L5, AWS TC: ~350k #engineering #software #swe #meta #amazon #aws #google
What makes you think the culture would be any better in general? PSC and impacc can wreck one’s mental health too.
The idea that handling different kind of ‘such’ challenges could be less unsettling - at least for a while
Organization profitability does not directly correlate with your individual performance review outcome. Instead, your performance will be compared to other engineers within your organization. Select the manager carefully. Maintaining strong technical and interpersonal relationships with your manager is beneficial, the final performance review decision rests with them and may involve subjective elements.
Profitability of the org is just not a thing. Your refreshers/grants depend on YOUR impact, not your org. Company bonus multipliers depend on how company is doing overall, not your org. Ads in general will have most impact opportunities and worse WLB.
Appreciate your response! As an outsider, I was looking for that metric to justify random layoff risk.
Unfortunately, its really hard to predict layoffs, because of so many factors beyond your visibility and control. Best thing to do is just focus on your own performance and pick a good team with supporting EM.
