Chime: - low 300K @ 14.5 valuation - culture is good, people seem really nice - Less WLB based on the team I'd be joining - doubtful about much upside as compared to Airtable - interesting mission Airtable: - mid 300K @ 5.7B valuation - lots of people with prestigious companies + universities - culture is also good here, WLB good - engineering seems stronger - lower valuation (which doesn't necessarily mean more upside) Leaning towards Airtable right now simply because it holistically seems like the better choice (WLB, comp+upside), but after talking to a few mature (20+ years) industry folks, I'm starting to doubt myself since they all suggested Chime. Their points were - Chime is B2C, Airtable is B2B. B2C >> B2B - Fintech is a hot sector right now - Airtable is just a productivity app with tons of competitors, Chime is a bank that is redefining banking for those who have been marginalized by traditional banks - Upside at Chime is actually higher, Airtable will just be bought out by Salesforce or similar company I feel like there's something about Airtable that people are finding exciting considering how many people are leaving top-tier companies to go there. Is there something that is actively drawing people to Airtable, or are they just really good at recruiting? currently @ FB TC: 310K YoE: 2.5 Level: E4
Look at Dropbox. A lot of top tier candidates used to go there.. but look at their stock price now..
fair point
DBX stock is pretty good this year tho
Also, Airtable is a fantastic product but never underestimate the power and hold on people of Excel (and Google sheets)
While Chime is competing with the likes of BofA and Wells Fargo. These bricks and mortar have serious operational costs, whereas Chime can provide most of the value with a lot less cost
Not a great argument. Ally had a similar narrative and they've been trading sideways for the past 5 years. Only saw a bump since covid like most other fintech
I think in the long term, banks will become digital.
position title? now in FB
software engineer, e4
how are you making $310k TC as E4? I'm a PM and my L4 offer from FB was $150k lower.
Lol, no surprise there Bud . The bigger the problem you're solving better is the 💰
Your L4 offer from FB was $160k TC? That doesn’t sound right
Is this SWE? I’ve seen chime offers hit $400k, seems like you can negotiate more?
Tried :( I only have 2.5 YoE and got leveled to L3 and so they said that’s the highest they could go
Ah. Really solid offer for 2.5 yoe congrats
Both are good offers OP. Like you mentioned in your post, Chime definitely has a higher upside just based on their business model (B2c)and how hot the fin tech space is. I Know couple of folks who’ve joined Chime and are pretty happy there (work life balance , potential IPO)
How was the Airtable interview. They give two options: take home or phone screen. Which is better
Phone
Do they ask leetcode type of questions in phone Or their custom type questions
Did you try to negotiate package with airtable? I have heard they never negotiate package.
Why r u leaving fb?
IPO cash in probably
stagnated at FB. it's not the worst situation to be in and I wouldn't mind staying longer, but just figured it was a good time to interview and see what happens
