LayoffsJan 5, 2023

Decision makers, how do you decide which people will be impacted in layoffs?

Can someone share what factors play a major role in deciding who to cut off? 1. Issues with management team 2. Not active in meetings, MIA 3. Low Rating in peer/manager review 4. Org/team not delivering enough (no individual judgement- just removing n head count from this org) 5. Random selection: No evaluation involved 6. Individual costs extra due to Visa, migration, etc. 7. 9-box review: Low potential or Low will

The points you mentioned is for PIP not layoffs. When layoffs happen it’s the Loss making Org or special project / product which is eating a lot of investment. Hope it helps

Our layoffs are driven by low ratings, shifts in business strategy (so teams get cut) and riskier ventures.

Names in a hat. It's really random

A lot of those I know who got laid off are high performers and with superb work ethics. Their fault? Being one of the highest paid team members.

First low performers, then those who have bad attitudes (i dont usually have that many on my team that fit into this category), then those with redundant knowledge (if 2 people know the same application, and im forced to reduce HC, then that is redundant knowledge)

Layoffs are never truly random, people say this to feel better. In some cases where the layoffs are massive (ex: Twitter), invariably it will look random when 50% of the company is cut. While it is true that entire orgs may be culled and in the process some high performers may be impacted, it does not mean performance is not factored in. Likewise, cutting the highest paid people is also a lie one tells oneself to feel better about the situation. The real question is if the high pay is matching the value of the work being delivered when the circumstances have changed.

Hmmmm speak for yourself. I have witnessed 3 lay offs where those who where the first to go where the highest paid in our team. Nevermind if they are high performing, which causes more frustration because some people who are doing the bare minimum got spared because they are not expensive and doing just ok. Ultimately, the leadership’s goal is to cut cost, not just on base but RSUs.
