Decision to Accept 6 month contract with Google

Hi Blind Community, I have currently been working full time as a Data Scientist for my company for around 4 years now. The job I currently have is a full time job, no contract. I recently got an offer to work as a temp contractor at Google for 6 months. I have always wanted to see how working at basically one of the biggest firms in America would be like, but is it worth risking my current standing and my decently high compensation for something that might not even pan out the way I envision? TC: 155k YOE: 4 Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you!

Contractors (red badge) don't get to participate in a lot of internal events. Not worth it.

I’m a current vendor. TVC is Google’s term for “red badge” - I can assure you that you almost certainly (99.99%) won’t get an offer after the contract. TVC roles outnumber FTEs. Someone has some project budget and needs to rent a data scientist. Take it if you want to see how G operates. Be prepared to deal with TVC red tape everywhere. You don’t get treated as a second class citizen by peers, and you get almost all of the perks Googlers do.

So it sounds like this is only an offer you take if you don’t have another option or are simply out of a job, and need one.

I think a lot of people fall for the “I’m really great, I’ll get in there, overdeliver, and pivot into an FTE role” - I really can assure you; it isn’t happening often. I work with TVCs that have been around for 8 years; no FTE offer. Feel free to PM

Can you negotiate a leave of absence from your current job? Or else ask for a 12 or 18 month contract that gives you room to find a permanent job afterwards? Leaving a full-time for a 6 month stint seems unwise

So many red flags. First, its just for 6 months. Then, it's contract position. It means you are not Googler and you won't get G benefit except for buses and food which are not important now. And you can't even put Google name on your resume. Anyone can report it and you will be kinda forced to remove it asap. You will be the employee of staffing company. If you are an immigrant with OPT/ H1B status, you may be doomed anytime from staffing company. The staffing companies are so infamous to leave people in limbo in very unexpected ways. They exercise " termination at will" part of the contract very often.
