Within the last year, I had accepted an offer with Blizzard and then retracted my acceptance the weekend before I was to start because, after a month of negotiations, Google finally come through with an acceptable offer (the difference over Blizzard was $150K/yr). Long story short, my team at Google is unsupportive, my manager is horrible, the tech island is pretty bad, I dread coming into work everyday, and this is the first time in my 10 year career where “putting up with grievances for money” is an attitude I can no longer fake. Even my partner has noticed working here has changed me for the worse. It gets to a point where a certain amount of money is “enough”, and not worth sacrificing your enjoyment for what you do. I think I’d be happier at Blizzard, even with the pay cut. What are the odds I could reapply for Blizzard, or did I permanently burn a bridge? TV $300K #swe #blizzard
I thought Goolgers were all happy workers.
Fuck no
Why don't you try another team at Google
I think my hesitation is driven by: *fear I won’t get a transfer approved *fear of retaliation *genuine discontent with the tech island. I don’t plan on working here for the rest of my career, and I have deep roots in the open source community, so being detached from how the rest of the software engineering world is evolving makes me feel both uneasy and sad.
Just ask and if no look for a new job
Change teams first to something that sounds more palatable. Find listings in grow and do a deep dive on their teams pages to ping current team members to see if you can chat.
Thank you for your response. Don’t I have to be > 1 year? What if I get declined - don’t I risk manager retaliation?
Ppl get transferred with even worse scenarios. You should be fine as long as you find a good fit at your destination.
Isn't Google supposed to be the happiest place on Earth?! Weird...
Dude don’t leave Google, I left thinking the same. I regret like shit, things are damn shitty outside.
Disassociate at work and enjoy life outside
What makes you think blizzard is any better? You'll just be making a 150k less a year and your manager will force you to sniff his farts (I know this was riot games but most game companies have the same culture).
Sniffing farts?! Sounds like a pro to me 😜
Most likely that bridge is burned - when candidates accept and then reneg so close to their starting date, it creates so much more work on the team to scramble and find a new person. Definitely that specific team and recruiter don’t want to deal with you again. Hopefully they didn’t mark you as such in their systems
FYI there is a difference between “reneg” and “rescinding your acceptance”. I did not try to renegotiate my offer. Didn’t say that in my post. I rescinded my acceptance of the offer.
“Reneg” is also slang for turning down your offer post-acceptance.
I heard about this situation. Bridge is burnt. There's no way blizzard recruiters are going to give you a second chance after rescinding your acceptance on the weekend before you started.

Corrected response. Anyways, rescinding your acceptance is even worse. 🤣 So, regardless of which one you did in the 2 days prior to your start date, you're fucked.
