I’m more or less a generalist; I have no engineering degree. I deliver software at Amazon however I can, from system architecture design to smaller things like defining service SLAs. I am in a non-tech job family, and the only reason I get to do this is because I continue to work for first time managers, who leave me alone as long as I get shit done. First time managers have been great in that way, but they’re a lot of work to manage, and by no fault of their own, lack experience in what I’m doing. Experienced HMs don’t read past my resume titles, but I really want to work for one, and in a technical role. Should I suck it up and get another degree? Keep doing the foot-in-door thing? I love what I do. How can I access the opportunities I want?
Try to research exectly what seems to be missing, and study that. You can get very broad and thus be underserved in school. However, it's based on what new things you need to learn.
That’s awesome advice, thank you. I’ll do that.
