Have an offer from Deloitte as a Senior Consultant w/ 1 YOE. $110k base, $15k sign on. How is the work/life balance in model risk consulting? I've heard people say 40-50 hours, but also as high as 60+. Looking for an average (since fluctuates by project/season) NOT STRATEGY CONSULTING #deloitte EDIT: thanks for the advice y'all! I ended up turning down the offer. Can afford to be picky since I'm in a good spot rn.
If it is Deloitte Advisory don’t fucking do it. Consulting itself is long hours but Deloitte is another level of hell. 1- politics politics politics 2- you need a good counselor, it’s like a career coach that will aggregate your performance reviews and advise you 3- the pay is not enough I stg 4- if Deloitte doesn’t sell enough Mrm work you could be benched which could hurt your utilization which hurts your ratings 5- the amount of proposal work, also known as PRD that I’ve done, I’d be a PhD holder by now. Base and sign on is average but just think about the wlb
Thanks for the response! Is the WLB really that bad? Also someone said that base and sign-on isn't bad since I only have 1 YOE.
Your base and sign on are pretty decent then for one year of experience. Just be warned of the cons as well as the pros. Pros include good projects if your managers like you, some travel, expense budget is decent. Another con is if there are no MRM projects you could be staffed on a random project that needs warm bodies
What business will you align most closely to? Also, location? When you say 1 YOE, do you mean you have 1YOE, or Deloitte considers you to have 1 YOE?
I'm not quite sure, I just know it's in the model risk management space. I have approval for remote but based out of somewhere in the midwest (travel will mainly be to NY where the team/clients are based). And yeah literally 1 YOE, I started working full time in model risk during my last semester of grad school last August.
Do you have another option? Work life balance is awful. They are paying you the top of the range for SC but still low in comparison to other companies. Deloitte believes that its name itself is a bonus for employees. If you have another option consider that, otherwise, start with Deloitte and leave when you are a manager in 2 years or so
THIS.
No other options mainly b/c I wasn't looking to leave my current job, just open to recruiters in my LinkedIn DMs offering full-time remote positions. That seems to be the general advice I am getting from friends too: stick it out until you make manager then take an exit opp to another firm.
If you want to have a life, don't join Deloitte
Damn is WLB really that bad? Even in non-strategy consulting?
They will make you work 60+ hours and give you peanuts in return
1 YOE and they hired you as a SC ? 110k isn’t bad based on your YOE. I’ve seen SC at higher bands though
I have a masters degree in financial engineering and work experience at a mid-large sized bank, so I guess that's why. I heard that 110 for non-strategy isn't bad, usually the higher bands are for strategy I think.
Dont come to deloitte. No WLB
Damn everyone here is shitting on WLB at Deloitte, I guess it might not be worth the few year grind.
What location
remote based out of the midwest
The others complaining about bad WLB are either the ones that can’t say no or the ones that heard a “story” about someone working longer hours during crunch times, which is not all the time. Do you really believe that someone will work 100 hours per week for 3 years in a row without quitting like someone reported above? LOL that’s just a childish exaggeration of someone feeling wronged. But seriously, what is a good WLB for you? When working in consulting you should expect a certain degree of overtime during project crunch times. Like anything in your career, you have to defend your WLB if you feel it is taking too much of your personal time. If you want less polarized answers, go to Fishbowl to ask your question. Blind has too many bittered and disgruntled Deloitte employees that wish they were in big tech but got no game to get there.
To your first point, that's actually common in IB. All my friends in IB were working 90+ hour weeks for years just to make it in the industry. A lot of them burned out and took offers to PE/VC with slightly better hours, but it's definitely more common than you think. As for WLB, I don't mind working OT. There are weeks in my current role where I'll work 50-60 hours, but those are few and far in between, and the good WLB balance at my current job means that I stand out for doing that. I'm worried that in order to do the same thing in consulting, I'll basically have to run myself into the ground to stand out from others.
Hey, I promise on everything I love my manager was working 110 hours per week. He quit. You think I’m lying? Do you want to ask him? Lol you’re honestly pathetic to think your colleagues would lie. His hours are still logged today. He quit only a few months back. No one is disgruntled because they “can’t make it into tech”. We prefer not to go into tech, that’s why we joined Deloitte. A balance of both. If you want to excel, you have to put in those hours at Deloitte. There are no excuses or exceptions. That’s not to say it isn’t a great place to be to learn top notch marketable skills in demand.
I think the only people commenting here are the ones who are not able to command good WLB.. Every project is different but in general you should expect to work 45-50 hours max.. 60+ hours are very rare, only in very specific scenarios and not a norm in any part of Deloitte for C and SCs.. I am working 3 projects still only working for 50 hours which is temporary as well.. You have a decent offer for 1 yoe
Thanks for the advice! If you don't mind me asking, what group are you currently in?
This is NOT true man do not believe someone w the username “devalue”
Terrible WLB
Ah dang, really? That's unfortunate. I would've hoped that MRM consulting was better WLB than strategy :(
Let me give you a full pictured view. You’re on Blind, so I assume youre aligned to technology at Deloitte. I know an Analyst that works 60 hours per week. Every week. Sometimes 80hrs. I know a senior consultant that works even more. MORE! They dont see the daylight, EVER. I know a manager that literally worked 110 hours per week for 3 years STRAIGHT and was not rewarded for it, so he left. He asked for 5K. They said no. He got more than a 100% increase somewhere else. It’s a place where there is no playing around. If you do, you’ll be hurting yourself. You gotta come here to learn and grow.
