Deloitte layoffs

UPDATE: Several people offered referrals. It is only the beginning of a beginning, as still neither employment nor housing is secured. I received support in ways I did not expect and am grateful to everyone who reached out. I mildly edited the post for better clarity. I have received an offer and signed a contract for a Cybersecurity Analyst position at Deloitte. After I accepted the offer, it was taken away the next day. I had no other offers on the table. My landlord threatened to evict me on the 31st of May unless I prove that the job was explicitly rescinded due to the COVID-19. Neither managers who interviewed me, nor HR agreed to give me any written statement. I am waiting to be asked to leave my apartment any minute now, and my only option to not become homeless is a bed in female shelter. I am a fresh grad with most friends and family living abroad. I have seen the news about layoffs at Deloitte today. Maybe someone here could help me or suggest what to do.

How far are your friends / family? If you’re in a different city and want to live there in the future, you can just put your items in a storage and move back home / stay with a friend temporarily. Not sure of your situation with them or if that is possible, but definitely try to avoid the female shelter with everything going on. I’m really sorry to hear that. A lot of people are losing their jobs these days or getting their offers rescinded; it’s a tough time for everyone. Again, I don’t know your personal situation, but try to temporarily crash with a friend / your family if you can. I think you can apply for unemployment if you got your offer rescinded, but I’m not sure if you have to show proof. Most importantly, keep your head up and focus on solutions. You’ll be fine!

Oh my god. This is unbelievably cruel. I am so sad to hear this happened to you. As an ex Deloitte I can say you dodged a huge bullet but it didn’t need to be done in this way. You need to demand that Deloitte send the necessary documentation as a record of your employment and that the offer was not rescinded due to failing a background screen so that you can begin claiming unemployment and get the federal subsidy too. You also need to leak this to anyone you know in the media and anyone you know in politics in your local area. There is a Telegraph reporter who lurks on Blind, but they don’t catch everything. Deloitte ought to be ashamed of themselves for doing this.

Could you share why was your experience with Deloitte negative here?

tl;dr a group of people made fun of me for my weight. When I reported them I was treated like I was the problem and put on a horrible project where I had a coworker throw a chair at me. I mentioned it to HR and said I would be pressing charges and I was fired less than 2 weeks later.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Other folks have covered a lot, so I’ll throw out one more option - sometimes local churches can help with accommodation (usually staying as a guest with one of the regulars). I had explored this option for my sister who was looking to do an internship at a hospital in another city where it was hard to get housing close by (found Airbnb, so didn’t take up this option). Given covid I don’t know if things are working as normal, but worth knocking this door if you find yourself lacking better options like crashing with a friend. Coming to jobs, market is still liquid in Silicon Valley. There are a lot of startups hiring in addition to usual big tech. Look on AngelList for openings. You can also post on blind if you find something/company and want a referral. Folks here will definitely help with that.

Thank you for taking the time to write that, and for the reassurance, it means a lot at the moment

Don't think hr is going to give you that letter. Companies will not explicitly say that it is covid 19 related for the reason that it's bad news for the companies financials/ reputation. Your best bet would be to not move out of the apartment and contact a lawyer asap. There might be a possibility that landlord can't evict you during these times. It's probably against the law. Stay strong!

Sorry to hear this. Deloitte is cutting back. Sign up for state social services as soon as you can, and keep looking for work. You’ll find something, the cream always rises to top. 👍
