Design centric companies?

I am a product designer and can someone here share what are some companies who value UX in CA? I am currently in a engineering centric organization and it’s frustrating to constantly advocate for the user. Here are some companies I was planning to look into: VMWARE Intuit Facebook Google Amazon Walmart Salesforce Apple LinkedIn AirBNB I don’t know how to add a poll. 😓 Thanks in advance!

Lyft qwerty019 Oct 30, 2020

Only Facebook and Walmart on that list value design. Airbnb Lyft Pintrest Instagram

Fiserv limey9 OP Oct 30, 2020

AirBNB doesn’t have roles open, Lyft and Pinterest haven’t looked into, Instagram is FB too.

Fiserv limey9 OP Oct 30, 2020

Intuit and google does not? I thought they both do. 😓

Google QuWy67 Oct 30, 2020

Uhhh Apple

Fiserv limey9 OP Oct 30, 2020

Haha not sure why I forgot. Yes Apple too.

Just updated

Adobe DsLq23 Oct 30, 2020

Can't believe Adobe hasn't been mentioned yet.

Capital One nhFm67 Nov 10, 2020

Yeah I have a couple friends at Adobe who seem to like it.

Square rkAh87 Oct 31, 2020

Biased, but I’ve found Design has a lot of support from leadership at Square.

Fiserv limey9 OP Oct 31, 2020

Being in Fintech, I would love to be part of square. It’s hard to get past applying online. 😂

Square rkAh87 Nov 2, 2020

Definitely get that! I’d recommend contacting a recruiter on LinkedIn (or email, if you can find one) to increase your chances. Will give you a better chance than just applying online.

Lots of companies are (even Google) are still pm or eng driven but at least value design. We have a long way to go before our role is understood and leveraged to its potential. We’re still often out of the product strategy and planning. At Google it’s been better than I expected but I think my team is unique.

Google Lopa90 Nov 3, 2020

Same here, the design culture is much better than most company I have been. Other folks (PM & Swe, TL) are listening and sensitive to design

I am just tired of being a pixel pusher. It’s so hard to advocate and product overrides UX decisions to meet the business goals. I want to start looking for a new job but scared it’s the same everywhere. 😓

Have you thought about transitioning into design research?

LinkedIn haverford Nov 14, 2020

Design research is even less empowered to override product decision. Atleast that’s how it is at LinkedIn.

Google design404 Nov 1, 2020

It’s our job and it’s not going to go away but I think you’ll find when you’re valued and supported it’s a lot easier and you won’t burn out. Best of luck!

Fiserv limey9 OP Nov 1, 2020

Agreed! Thank you!

LinkedIn indesign Nov 2, 2020

I wasn't gonna say LinkedIn, but if vmware and walmart is on there, LinkedIn should def be included. Honestly not too bad, I feel like we have a substantial influence as a design org on the product direction.

Fiserv limey9 OP Nov 3, 2020

I don’t see any design roles open though. Is there a hiring freeze? I would actually love working for LinkedIn

LinkedIn indesign Nov 3, 2020

Oh, I don't see anything about you looking specifically looking for open roles in your post. It sounded like you just wanted to know in general where design-centric companies were. Also idk why you say we have no roles open - did you try searching on LinkedIn? haha We do have one Senior and one Staff role open, but you didn't write your YoE either so idk if you'll qualify https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/2194871759/?eBP=JOB_SEARCH_ORGANIC&recommendedFlavor=TOP_APPLICANT&refId=5bSOq9PJ7sYiHnfVw%2FExUA%3D%3D&trackingId=hl1dazrSOkGW6a3iWPPV7g%3D%3D&trk=flagship3_search_srp_jobs https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/2181325685/?eBP=JOB_SEARCH_ORGANIC&recommendedFlavor=ACTIVELY_HIRING_COMPANY&refId=5bSOq9PJ7sYiHnfVw%2FExUA%3D%3D&trackingId=JLV%2Fnouf2Y7zfKc%2B10UIcA%3D%3D&trk=flagship3_search_srp_jobs

On another note, it’s good to see there are a bunch of designers here. Most discussions are engineering centric and it’s hard to tell which company has good WLB or culture for designers. I am currently in Georgia and plan to relocate due to husband’s role in CA. Anyone open to refer me? I do know designers hesitate to refer others, which is totally understandable. I thought there is no harm to ask. I have over 10yrs of UX experience 😅

Flexport zrwq23 Nov 3, 2020

Flexport! And hiring product designers now, pm me if interested

Fiserv limey9 OP Nov 3, 2020

Thank you! All the roles are based out of Seattle or Chicago. Not moving there. 😂😂 do you like it?

Flexport zrwq23 Nov 3, 2020

We are also looking in Amsterdam, Shenzhen and San Francisco :). Yes I like it. Hard problems to solve, strong focus on research, great pm/ux relationship and a mid size but growing design team where there is a lot yet to do. Is not a design centric company, I would say it is a service and product centered culture but leadership takes design seriously and designers (even ICs not only leadership) frequently talk to C level and CEO.
