Apologies in advance for the lengthy post - thank you to those that read and provide some advice. I’ve only posted on here one other time, but I’m getting to a point where I am at such a standstill in my career that I could use advice/guidance. I currently work for a digital marketing agency right outside of NYC. We are headquartered in Toronto, and work with a ton of big brands, but my account deals with the largest insurance provider in the US. I work directly with the individual business owners (agents) with the hope of educating them on the importance of the digital space and, ultimately, pivoting them to purchasing a Google Ads program. I started in Fall 2017 as an Account Executive. Base pay was low, but my commission was pretty good and I had a few years of earning between 120-150k. Over time, the account has changed tremendously. Expectations from our client changed, outside competition increased, and, most importantly, the commission structure changed massively. I have been promoted twice - to senior AE and to Team Lead. I still sell (and have been the top performing salesperson on the team each month I’ve worked for this company), but I also manage a team of AEs and help with Senior Management projects. My last promotion was in March 2020, and it doesn’t it make sense for me to get “promoted” again because taking a Supervisor role will pull me off the phones and cause me to earn less money overall. The culture is toxic - I could give a million examples, but I’ll just leave it at that. To make things worse, our HR department is in Toronto, so nobody witnesses what goes on in our office and senior management is essentially free to do what they want. Over the course of 7 years, I’ve only ever interviewed with one company - Google. They approached me for a GCS sales role, and I made it all the way to hiring committee, but was not selected. I need a change - desperately. I simply do not know where to turn. It seems like in order to be hired in the SaaS or Medical fields (which is where compensation is best), I need years of prior experience in those industries. What would you do if you were in my shoes? I’m passionate about personal finance, crypto, digital marketing, AI, and a bunch of other things, so something in one of those fields would be great, but beggars can’t be choosers. Thanks in advance for any legitimate feedback you might be able to provide. 30 YO 115k TC #ads #growth #marketing #sales
I would try and diversifying your skill and take on projects that are outside your expertise within the company. I don’t know your exact background but it looks like you are in a comfortable place in regards to knowledge but you’ll need to expand outside of search. In this market folks are looking for experience in X and unfortunately there are a ton of google ads experience individuals. Recommendation: Try going into projects for social media or data analytics within your current company
