Detroit to Seattle

Hello Blind friends, I’m looking to move from the auto industry to tech. I make $110k TC in Detroit and amazon is willing to pay $210K TC. Do you guys think it’s a good move? Thanks.

I've lived both places. In Seattle now and would never go back to MI. That said, it can be a tough transition. Tech company culture is very different from automotive. Seattle culture is very different than MI. Cost of living in Seattle is bonkers compared to MI. That $210k TC doesn't go quite as far as you think it does. DM me if you want more specifics.

I've lived in both places as well. While I agree with likea🕳️ that the cost of living is high in Seattle compared to Detroit, I don't think it'll be hard to get by with $210K TC. Just don't get those super fancy apartments which go for $3.7K a month. No state tax in Washington also helps. The switch from auto to tech is a good move in my opinion. Getting into Amazon and tech will also open up other avenues for you where as things seem very limited in Detroit.

Go for it. Having Amazon on your resume will open so many doors in the future. If it doesn't work out, you can always go back...but I don't think you will. Congrats on the offer.

Just work for Amazon in Detroit. You are financially worse off if you make the move. I work for Google in Detroit and, despite lower pay (marginally) than the Bay, it's insane how much further that dollar goes.

Hey! If you don’t mind, what domain and role are you working on in G Detroit?

I was stratops. Left for a remote fintech, but am still a huge fan of the FAANG in the midwest approach. It's like a pay hack.
