Dev to Recruiter

I’m a senior swe. It’s not bad but I enjoy interviewing, recruiting, networking (in person), resume pop ups for university clubs etc. I don’t feel like my day to day as a code monkey makes positive impact in anyone’s life but investing in younger generation does. Is there a way to switch role to recruiter? Any other roles I should consider? Is this career/TC suicide?

Maybe solutions engineering? Less, if any, coding and more interacting with people/customers.

Does Microsoft have an internal mobility team? If yes, reach out to the recruiter responsible for People/HR. You have a better shot of getting a recruiting role internally with no experience than externally.

You’ll make less money but you’ll crush it as a recruiter

He’ll crush it if he has the personality for it. There’s a lot of patience and organization involved. Plus you need to hit your metics.

Yeah it is fun and games until you have to tell 1000s of people they aren't getting that dream offer they want

You can absolutely switch. A lot of companies would be interested in someone who actually understands technical details beyond a surface level in recruiting. The biggest question to ask yourself is on the personality side. Can you handle someone signing an offer and still not showing up? Can you handle being lied to? These are small examples but if any of this would drive you absolutely nuts, you’ll hate recruiting. I love it. But it’s not for everyone.

All of this. You have to be detail oriented, organized, metics driven, patient, excited about the company/role/team, and candidate experience focused. Think sales, but a lot less pushy.

being a swe Pretty sure he would be all those imo

Swes are expected to talk good(cross team collab, at least at big techs), Documentations, code, Meet timelines. Apart from a bit of soft Skill I do not see a reason why swes cant be recruiters. Some recruiters even at Big techs are not that great imo, but for the pay not sure though, but definitely someone as a swe at a not a big tech would definitely make hell lot more being a recruiter at a big tech

There are Advocate roles you should look into. Or other roles in Student Ambassador / Developer Relations.
