Laid off from Bizzabo. 2 years so I got….2 weeks severance. This is the 3rd layoff in like…3 years? Layoffs should not be a lever companies can pull whenever they want that just disrupts the lives of 100s of people because they fucked up. Severance packages should be at the very least 2 months. It should hurt companies to fire people. Fuck at will employment. Atleast CEO or CFO should step down. Seeing all these people applaud their company for laying them off is insane. We should be DRAGGING THEM. but alas - US sucks when it comes to protecting its workers. It’s a really bad feeling to feel powerless /rant
Layoffs are already factored into the compensation. If you didn’t save it, that’s on you. If you want job security join a union, like that European one.
Why aren't companies held to higher standards of planning so they're not laying people off willy nilly? And layoffs being factored into compensation already is a big fat joke, like you.
Because shareholders do hold management to the standards they want.
In Europe there is. Society needs to decide what is more important, the feelings and bank accounts of billionaires or the well being of society as a whole. This is why “right to work” laws needs to go away and unionization and other things need to be more mainstream again. There is a reason employers are so desperate to brainwash you about how bad unions are. What do you think is more effective, you individually negotiating with a multinational corporation or all the workers negotiating with a multinational corporation? Also strengthening worker rights laws in the USA and we stop making the employer and employee relationship so one sided in the favor of the employer.
Sounds great! We should definitely follow Europe. I can’t wait to get paid half as much and get taxed twice as much for my whole life just so that the 2-3 times I get laid off I can get 3 months severance instead of 3 weeks. Having unions would be even better! I’d love to lose 2% of my pay for life so that it’s way harder to get rid of my slacker coworkers who earn more and have a higher title than me simply because they have been around longer. Then when layoffs finally do happen, l can get laid off instead of them because of seniority! We need this like yesterday in US tech!
Damn New, how can you type with that boot so far down your throat?
I’m sorry you’re in this situation, but just like you can quit at any time, your company can fire you at any time. Tech can be unstable, so try to save as much as you can while you’re working.
It goes both ways. You could easily rewrite your post from the employer’s perspective with important employees leaving and only giving 2 weeks notice.
V r butt wage kukz
They have that in Europe. The tradeoff is that compensation is lower, unemployment rates are higher, and it takes longer to find a job because companies are very careful about adding headcount. Personally, I prefer the approach in the US (I've been laid off 3 times on my career).
unIoNs R bAD THo??
Sorry to hear that. And I agree. It’s cruel to look at someone after two years of service and give them 2 weeks of pay. We really need to move in the direction of having capitalism with a heart. I want to say it’s common sense stuff/ but clearly it’s not. Should make minimum notice. Minimum severance or fines for non compliance. Or that should be part of the offer package when signing on to a company. Parental leave and sick time should be mandated
Layoffs are hard but if I look I pretty much signed up for at-will agreement with all the companies I worked which means I already signed up for it. But 2 weeks is a low severance, wish you were given a decent one. All the best and good luck!
Sorry to hear about your layoff. Best of luck on finding a new gig.
