Just stating the truth because autism/ADHD spectrum is afraid to speak up about what they are really going through because they fear stigma and repercussions of looking like a difficult employee. Autism/ADHD diagnosed people do not thrive in open office environments or places with lots of noise & potential for distraction. They need their home office environment to focus. There’s still a long way to go for corporate environments to accommodate the neurodiverse. In tech especially you find lots of autism/ADHD spectrum because at a young age they realize they are good at introverted and undistracted work at a computer when ALONE in their own environment. I don’t know how this narrative moves forward, but the struggles of those on the spectrum returning to in office environments are very real! And it should also be known that these people make the absolute best and brilliant employees when they are allowed a work structure that works for them and not against them!
Half of Eng could be diagnosed with autism if they tried though, and with this incentive you can bet they’d try.
It’s very real for people who have it, though. It can completely cripple your ability to function.
That is also true :/ but I think the point I made is part of the reason this will never be a policy unfortunately
I have ADHD and I work better in office. However I don't do much coding these days so I can understand your perspective.
It’s a spectrum. Some ADHD is very extroverted and in the hyperactive in the body and some ADHD (called ADHD-PI) is very introverted and hyperactive in the mind. Also depends on the type of job… a lot of creative & design is ADHD because they can think outside the box, but also they need blocked time to focus and an environment where they won’t be interrupted.
Lol at thinking ADHD is real (called delusional)
Yup, you should work with your doctor and your HR team to request a "reasonable accommodation" for the condition. The company if larger than 50 employees will be compelled to work with you and your medical team to help you out here (ADA).
I would add that the same should apply for those with anxiety disorders such as GAD, panic attacks, agoraphobia, etc.
Agree completely
This has always been the case. The right people can get special permission if they are important to the bus. My brother is one such case as he is agoraphobic. The rest trying to use it as some excuse need to go in.
Why should an employer do it for a small %age of employees?
If it helps to hire more pool of talent
They can’t implement a wfh policy for a fraction of employees without making other employees unhappy.
An ADHD person here and I work much better from office. True as long as the commute is short or comfortable.
Employers only have to make reasonable accommodations.
oh god stop and grow up. autism and adhd are two different things stop linking all this bs to the worst case. This nonsense is exactly why I’m in favor of pulling people in and firing when necessary.
High functioning autism and ADHD-PI have a lot of overlap. Go research it yourself.
Both are disorders of executive function and they are extremely comorbid.
Grow a pair
Thank you for reiterating my original point that companies have a long way to go to accommodate neurodivergent people.
