Part 1: https://us.teamblind.com/s/WdsT8m8q Sunday, 11:30pm You had a pretty chill weekend. Hung out with a couple friends at a rock climbing gym. Cleaned your apartment for the first time this month. You head to bed to face the week ahead. Monday, 7:15am Your company has been growing fast recently. They’ve hired so much, they added a new company bus route that goes by your apartment. Rushing through your morning routine, you make it out the door just in time to walk to the shuttle stop. Monday, 7:47am A massive, silver double-decker pulls up. You queue up behind other employees and board the bus. As you enter and scan the rows for open seats, you notice everyone is buried in their laptops, headphones in ears. It’s silent except for the hum of the engine. You pick a seat and get out your laptop. You didn’t plan on working, but you don’t want to stand out. Monday, 9:49am This bus takes forever. You didn’t realize it would go way out of the way to drop people off at another campus. It finally pulls up to your building and you shove your laptop into your backpack. You hop off the bus and run behind it to cross the street. As soon as you round the corne— ??????, ??:?? You awaken to a cacophony of alarms. You’re in a hospital bed covered in tubes and wires. A doctor and a team of nurses rush in and start checking all over your body. ??????, ??:?? Some time passes and another doctor enters. She says she’s a psychologist. She begins to explain you were hit by a bus on the way to work and have been in a coma for the past two and a half years. You pass out. ??????, ??:?? You awaken again to a soft caress. You look up and see a woman. She looks familiar. July 17, 2024, 6:02pm You learn that this is your wife. Your mom not only arranged your marriage, but orchestrated the wedding, while you were in a coma. July 17, 2024, 9:38pm You turn on the TV in your hospital room. It’s tuned to FOX Business. You figure your dad was the last person to turn on this TV. They’re talking about a new tech IPO: WeRain. They show a clip of the CEO. Wait a minute, is that your Lyft driver from a few days—err, years ago? July 19, 2024, 8:31am Your parents arrive from back home to see you. They look much older than you remember. August 2, 2024, 7:45am You’re discharged from the hospital and go to your new wife’s apartment. She makes you fresh idly. August 2, 2024, 9:12am You get the bill from the hospital. You owe 4 million USD. Realizing you’re not even employed anymore, you pass out again. September 8, 2024, 11:30am You’re starting to build back a routine. Your parents are staying for a few months to help you get settled. You see a psychologist, physical therapist, and doctor each a few times per week. You’re slowly getting stronger, mentally and physically. September 27, 2024, 9:00am You begin studying for interviews again. What money you had saved is burning fast, and your parents and wife can only support you for so long. November 30, 2024, 10:30am After a month of intense studying, you feel pretty good and start practice interviewing. November 30, 2024, 11:09pm You post about your situation on Blind. It blows up. Some don’t believe your story—you don’t blame them—but others promise to give you referrals. January 8, 2025, 5:00pm You’ve built back a lot of stamina and muscle strength. You wonder if you’re stronger than you were before. Oddly, you feel better than before. Tomorrow you have an on-site with WeRain. They have the best TC and perks out of all the WAANG companies. January 9, 2025, 10:31am You smashed your first two rounds. A warmup easy, a variation of LC 32767 (Hard), and LC 14480 almost verbatim. January 9, 2025, 2:40pm Behavioral round went well. When they asked about the gap in your resume, they were amazed by your story. System design round was solid. You designed a simple decentralized Web 3.0 setup. The final round is another coding round with the tech lead. January 9, 2025, 3:01pm The tech lead joins the room. You immediately recognize him and freeze up. It’s the guy from Amazon you rejected years back. You hope he doesn’t recognize you. He doesn’t say, but you’re pretty sure he does based on his reaction. January 9, 2025, 3:02pm He asks you for a moment to get a new problem. After a minute he pastes a problem which you realize is a variant of the traveling salesman problem. You tell him that you realize this is an NP-hard problem, but he tells you to use heuristics to come up with a reasonably efficient solution. January 10, 2025, 10:45am Your recruiter calls to let you know that they won’t be proceeding with your candidacy. He tells you you had all “Hire” ratings but one “Strong no hire”. Based on those grounds he said he couldn’t start a new round for you until next year. TC: 0 NW: -4M YoE: complicated #swe #tech #life
