Got downleveled to L5 after L6 SDET interview and the recruiter just asked me what you were expecting for l6 and I said around 310K . The recruiter got back to me and said they can do that. I have a meeting with recruiter in which they will give me a formal offer. Some questions, please answer if you can. 1) I currently have a really good WLB at akamai although the tc is low 170K including bonus and stock with 8yoe. Is it worth moving although my TC is getting increased nicely. 2) how can I negotiate better , the location is Boston? 3) I’m also interviewing at other companies, how long can I ask before I sign the offer ? 4)this is not AWS , so can this be hire to fire, although the manager said the team is very new and they are building from scratch, what kind of WLB can I expect ? Thank you for reading #amazon #comp
First rule of negotiation: don't disclose your numbers first. You have very limited chance now to negotiate more unless you have a competing offer in your hand.
I know, I didnt say what I was expecting, but I said what the other recruiter told me
For L5 , don’t settle for below 350. The range goes upto 380
How should I put this with the recruiter ?
Simply, say you have had time to research the role and market compensation and this is what you have arrived at. Also sdet is a little lower than sde
Typo and meant 410
Not saying a number is generally good advice but sometimes you need to give a number. Go to levels and give 1.2x of the highest salary you see there (don’t forget to remove noise as sometime people add 4 year grant to one year compensation)
Highest salary for amazon or for any other company?
waht do you mean by 4 year grant
Okay, why not do it over the call ? I thought that the recruiters wont generate an offer without getting our expectations too?
What was the breakdown? Whats the base?
If you had cleared L6 bar you could have asked for 500k, but with the recent market cool down 500k is probably out of reach, especially when many other companies don't pay 500k for SDETs. About 4 months back i negotiated for 500k and got 480k for an L6 role. But for an L5, I seriously doubt you will be able to cross 350k in the current market
Yeah the recruiters are not budging more than 310K. But that is doubling my current tc. So it seems too good for me to reject
That's what it matters. If you're getting good TC than what you're earning go for it. But be warned getting to L6 is going to at least 2+ years
you mad bro. 310 for new hire l5 is instant regrets. Dont join.
Why, that sounds like a pretty good range acc to boston’s levels.fyi
Btw what's your yoe?
7 yoe
It's great that you had an opportunity to interview for an L6 role, but don't be hard on yourself, you will find lot of folks with ~10 yoe at L5 level in the company.
Never disclose your numbers at the start. You should first listen to the offer and then negotiate.
I know. How can I go forward now?
Competing offer might help revise the offer (iykyk)
