They didn’t give feedback after onsite. How do I know what I did right or wrong? How to improve myself? Company interviewed: Google
Sadly this is typical. Startups are usually more willing to give feedback if you need some more practice.
Oh I see. Maybe I should interview with a few startups then.
Hmm. Atypical to not get feedback. Are you a design noob? Would highly recommend the book Solving Product Design Exercises
I am not a noob I guess? I have a few years of experience but when I go to onsite I feel weird doing design exercise for those interviews. Those are different from real work. Since they don’t give feedback, there is no way to know how my performance is during the interviews... Thanks for recommending the book!
Honestly I never do well on these. Also it's a poor example of the way you actually work through a problem and on a team. Are there any designer friends you can practice with?
Hey, can you tell me how the interview process was? What type of rounds & questions?
I will DM you.
I would also like to know the answer to this question if you can DM me! Hope you found a great offer elsewhere.
I had the same experience last May. I got to the final on-site and then got rejected. I did not get a lot of feedback to understand how I can improve. Recruiter told me I need more experience.
Sorry to hear. I guess what your recruiter said was on point - more experience. We do need more experience with onsite interview!
It typically comes down to experience and not being strong enough at the core skill set for the job. It could also be how you approach a design problem and work through the solution. Perhaps you were missing key parts?
Yes I agree with you. I am trying to figure that out through other interviews but wish this one could give me feedback too.
Which company? Don’t be hard on yourself. Try next company, or this company after 6-12 months.
Thank you. It was Google. The recruiter said I can reapply 12-18 months later and next time they may refer to the interview notes from this time and give me some specific suggestions. But I want to learn immediately and improve in the coming interviews with other companies :/
That is difficult. :(
