Hey dudes, I am a L5 PM at Amazon currently grinding away with 18m of product manager experience, four years other FAANG experience and background in data science. I've been told by a friendly Principal Product Manager (L7 PPM-T) that I am under-levelled for what I am working on and that he would have put me forward for a promo to L6 Product Manager Technical at least one cycle previously. He advised me that my current product scope would be normally be assigned to a L6 PMT and that I exceed the bar for promo. This seems aligned with levelling documents and legitimizes my frustrations with working with some lower performing L6 colleagues who were higher levelled but required support from me. My engineers (including SDMs) also have openly expressed a preference for working with me over other PMs and given high visibility and v positive feedback as part of Forte. I enjoy working with the engineers and we have a great rapport, I would probably miss them a lot if I left. Unfortunately, I was transferred to a new manager 3m ago who didn't make promo a priority as they were onboarding. I am now having discussions around Promo but no clarity on timelines, and I get the sense my manager doesn't think it's important. New manager is friendly but doesn't seem very interested in me. I have been approached by a recruiter for a Samsung offering +60-80% bump in total comp for a Senior Product manager role and I am interviewing currently. I think Is it worth staying at Amazon to pursue an L6 PMT role? What kind of timelines would I normally expect for an L6 promo? Thank you for any help and good vibes for any advice. Leave, if you get the offer. Amazon is not worth sticking around as you will not get such a bump even with L6.
Yeah, if the new opportunity guarantees hike take it. Starting with a new manager is basically starting from ground 0. It will depend on your work and a bit of how much your new manager likes you. Also, ask your old manager to give the feedback in written to the new manager and vouch that you deserve a promotion (if you’re comfortable asking)
I'd go with the new opportunity, personally.
Take the new opportunity. Develop solid product chops elsewhere. If still interested, you can boomerang back to Amazon at a higher level
L6 is a big pay bump at Amazon but the documentation process is a total b*tch. Push hard for promo and if it looks like itll take a year or more try to jump to a L6 equivalent role at another company. Google L5 PM is approximate to L6 PMT for example.
Nope. Really depends on where OP is in the pay band for L5. OP, I would recommend jumping ship. Have you learnt everything that you need to (PRFAQs, 3YS , managing a large number of stakeholders , OP1s and OP2s)...then there's no need for you to stay. You will likely be doing the same things even. Jump ship to learn different things.
