8 YOE about to work at a smaller startup where I'm building everything from the ground up, including team and processes. What's a good number to start at for base? #enterprise #sales
Depends on location and industry
HR tech and SoCal (company based in NYC)
I would ask for $350k OTE minimum and a good equity chunk, shoot for $400k High risk, you’re going to be the CRO, BDR, AE and CSM all at once. Asking for less would be a red flag to me showing that someone doesn’t understand the challenges involved. Unless it’s a super SMB or B2C solution, that is, even then $250/300k min Take it from someone who is doing the same thing right now you need enough comp to justify the work needed
Based in SoCal and it's an HR tool with pre-seed funding. They came in at 90k with uncapped commission and .02% equity. I'm thinking about going back with $130k base/$350k OTE since it will be enterprise sales and .2% equity. Does that seem fair?
Do they have existing clients/have info on deal size? That is a low base for the amount of risk involved. I would look for a high enough base for you to justify it for yourself, and/or a guarantee of the variable comp for at least a quarter if not more. Again you’ll be doing the job of prospecting, selling, hiring, tech stack purchases and negotiation, billing, and CSM all in one. What amount of money in either base or guarantee will make you put up with that? I think your offer is pretty fair, if you’re going to be one of the first 10 or 20 employees, .02% seems pretty low
if it's a smaller start up, you be lucky with 300OTE, 150-150 Not saying you not worth more..they just have less to spend, equity play
Nailed it
Sounds interesting, DM if they’re looking for a Director of Solution and Strategy. 9 YOE in start up and big 4.
Before discussing comp, I would also check with founder/CEO about the budget for hiring in the next 12 months. Can you hire a RevOps guru and at least one, maybe 2 sales rockstars? If not, you’ll end up in a player-coach model, also doing reports in the CRM and you’ll be stretched thin.
Managing people at least 400 50/50 split IC 300 50/50 split
What were you making as an AE?
How small? Pre-revenue? How many employees? If you’re super early <5-8 employees I’d expect 80-100k cash and 1-5% YOE: 8 TC: 350k
$145 base + $145 commission at ServiceNow
