In a few comments on other posts I’ve read Disney uses a lot of outdated tech or outsources a lot of their engineering/sw related things. Are there any company’s who’s products they use that would possibly be in the realm of entertainment tech? Or any other companies in general that would be more of an entertainment tech company than Disney? Base: 85k (idk my TC) YOE: 1 #Entertainment #disney
The comments are correct that Disney is not a tech company. There are some tech parts of the company (Imagineers, DPEP connected products, Disney+) but most of the company is really CMS work. Disney has lots of content and just needs ro throw it on a page, from park hours to covid disclaimers to hotel descriptions to national geographic speakers to ABC shows to ESPN stats. I can't imagine getting around that fact at other entertainment companies
Would you say Imagineers is the closest to a tech company?
Yeah the 3 teams I mentioned are like tech startups within Disney. They make presentations on stuff they're working on during a weekly webinar and it looks like fun. It's inspiring to see cool tech being worked on, but depressing to know that you can't talk about it until it's public months or years later.
OP, can you give some examples of entertainment tech?
Anything related to audio/visuals, ride tech like what makes good illusions (don’t know specifics), stuntronics. I don’t know other specifics right away but hopefully that helps.
OP: What you’re describing sounds like “themed entertainment”, try looking into TEA https://www.teaconnect.org/ Disney in-house should be imagineers but I think there are also more traditional SWEs that work in parks. There are also agencies that work on ride tech, you could probably look at parks that have recently opened like in Saudi Arabia and see which companies won the bid on those. This is an example of an agency: https://thehettemagroup.com
I work at Disney and I enjoy it there. Don’t let the negative talk dissuade you from applying.
What part of the company?
Wunderlich-malec engineering.
Animax, Oceaneering, Unisystems, Dynamic Attractions, Cavu Designwerks, etc.
Can’t speak to details but the folks I spoke to on the Disney+ side seemed smart and interested in tech. I was biased in favor though because they were using Scala which I enjoy. But who knows, every company has good and bad teams and work.
Check out WET Design. Founded by Disney Imagineers.
They hire SWEs?
Not right now at least: https://wetdesign.applytojob.com/apply/
Op, I ron’t understand tour question. What is your ultimate goal? Are you trying to find companies to work for? Why care about Disney if everyone else wants to get into FAANG? Sorry, not trying to question your thinking. Just trying to understand your reasoning so that I can help better.
Disney Streaming has a lot of bespoke stuff (that’s an extension of what was built in BAMTech, the company that Disney bought and turned into Disney Streaming). There’s also a big move toward eliminating a lot of third party dependencies toward more in-house solutions. This happens in spite of Disney not being a tech company and Streaming is definitely more like a startup within the sleepy entertainment company that owns us. Recent changes in senior leadership on the Streaming side definitely make me think that startup dam we’ve had might be breaking.
You mean dam breaking for better or for worse? Where do you see things heading in the near future? In terms of service and the quality of the apps, I see Disney as one of the better ones out there. Hope the change is for the better. Also, how is tour relationship with Hulu?
It remains to be seen if it’s better or worse. We’re also currently in the process of merging all the Disney and Hulu engineering teams together. It’s been quite bumpy with a lot of folks in the Hulu side having departed the company.
Is that tc entry level? Seems like LM and KP are competing on who’s base pay can be lower. Lol
Lol not entry level. Entry level base was about 80k.
So yeah, entry level lol 5k bump is not breaking through to the senior band 😂
